Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag singles out ‘magnificent’ midfielder who is ‘doing a great job’

Man Utd Erik ten Hag has praised the “magnificent” Bruno Fernandes after another accomplished performance from the Portugal midfielder.

The 28-year-old was on fine form yet again in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Leicester, with Fernandes assisting two of his club’s three goals.

A Marcus Rashford double at Old Trafford ensured the forward stole the show once again, but his teammate Fernandes was equally crucial as Man Utd continued their rich vein of form.

The Portugal star fed Rashford for the opener in the 25th minute, with Fernandes then supplying the key pass for Jadon Sancho to make it 3-0, shortly after Rashford had scored his second of the game.

It means Fernandes is now on double figures for assists in all competitions this season, with six in the Premier League, two in the Europa League and one in each the FA Cup and League Cup.

The midfielder, who has proven his versatility with top displays in central, attacking and right midfield in recent times, has also netted seven goals. Fernandes also registered seven key passes on Sunday, with his display earning high praise from his boss.

“It was a good [opening] goal, once again a great pass from Bruno, great goal from Rashy and then we are 1-0 up,” said Ten Hag, as reported by LiveScore. “The second half was all us and Bruno Fernandes played a magnificent game.

“The team is putting Rashford in the right positions, especially Bruno, he creates how many passes, he gives behind, he crosses in. Not only Bruno but I think he is doing a great job.

“We need all players in form, but we have to follow the principles of our way of play and if we do that, we can play very well and we have seen that in the second half.”

Man Utd manager only focused on ‘tomorrow’

Man Utd manager Ten Hag has refused to be drawn into talk of trophies this season, amid the club still being in contention for the Premier League, Europa League, League Cup and FA Cup.

The Red Devils sit third in the league table, just five points behind leaders Arsenal, and have a League Cup final with Newcastle at Wembley this weekend.

They also have a strong chance of progressing further in the Europa League after drawing 2-2 at Barcelona in the first leg of their play-off encounter, while they have been drawn at home to West Ham in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Ten Hag has done a sensational job in the Man Utd dugout since joining from Ajax last summer, helping turn the fortunes of the club around in dramatic and rapid fashion. But despite the huge positivity he has helped create around Old Trafford, the boss is not focusing on matters beyond this month.

“We don’t think about that, we think about tomorrow, we have to be a better version of ourselves and that is what we have to work for,” added Ten Hag. “We are in February, don’t look far ahead.”
