Several of Erik ten Hag’s underperforming players could be sent packing in the summer as Manchester United look to undergo a significant restructure under Erik ten Hag.
The Dutchman was dissatisfied with his team following their 2-0 loss at Newcastle, telling his United players that they are “in the wrong place” if they lack the desire to achieve.
United will face Brentford on Wednesday as they look to rebound from another road loss against a team in the top half of the table. This game will likely determine how the Red Devils finish the season.
Ten Hag’s squad is now fifth in the rankings, tied with fourth-place Tottenham in terms of points. But, they would leapfrog Spurs if they avoid defeat against Brentford, who defeated Spurs 4-0 in August.
Ten Hag Will Look to Strengthen United This Summer
Since that disgrace, there has been an enormous improvement, but Ten Hag demands more. The 53-year-old manager was visibly angry with a number of his players following the loss to Newcastle, and this could prompt him to shuffle his pack at the end of the season.
Jadon Sancho is a potential candidate for ejection from the team. The £73 million man has struggled to play frequently so far this season, and Ten Hag is growing irritated with him.
Sancho, 23, has only scored twice in 12 games since returning to the club after a three-month absence, failing to make the desired impression. According to the Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag is dissatisfied with Sancho’s development and expects more from him because his long-term future is in jeopardy.
In the meantime, Scott McTominay is another player whose future is unknown. Sunday, when he was given a rare start for United at St. James’s Park, the Scottish star, who had excelled for his country on international duty, failed to deliver.
McTominay has been linked with a move to Newcastle, so this was a possible opportunity for him to demonstrate why the Magpies are interested in him and why United should keep him. But the 26-year-old provided neither, and he may be surplus to requirements given that Ten Hag prefers other midfielders.
Center-back Phil Jones will depart United this summer, however. The center-contract back’s has expired and he has not featured for Ten Hag this season.
Club Captain Could be Among Those to Leave United
Harry Maguire’s time with the Red Devils may possibly be coming to an end, despite his £80 million transfer four years ago. The England defender has fallen behind Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in the pecking order and has been linked with a summer transfer back his former club Leicester.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, in contrast to the four previously mentioned players, has performed admirably when given the opportunity, but he now does not fit Ten Hag’s system and may be offloaded.
The 25-year-old has performed admirably throughout his time on the field, but United will reportedly “listen to bids” for him this summer as they seek a new right-back profile.
Anthony Martial could possibly be sold in the summer despite his early success under Ten Hag’s leadership. The Frenchman’s injury history has angered fans, and he has been unable to maintain his fitness for extended periods of time.
Wout Weghorst has replaced him up front, and the on-loan Dutch striker is likely to depart this summer too.
