Victor Osimhen, a striker for Napoli, has confessed that it is his “dream” to play in the Premier League, while Manchester United continues to negotiate his summer transfer.
United manager Erik ten Hag prioritizes signing a goal-scoring striker this summer, and the Nigerian international tops the club’s striker shortlist.
This season, Osimhen has scored 21 goals for Napoli, who are attempting to end a 33-year title drought.
The 24-year-old has forged a deadly striking partnership with Georgian forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and he has led an attack that has scored 58 league goals this season and leads Serie A by 15 points with 13 rounds remaining.
Ten Hag is thought to have given United permission to seek three other attackers, with the recruitment of a center forward this summer being a top priority.
Wout Weghorst’s loan agreement ends at the conclusion of the season and he is expected to return to parent club Burnley, who look set for an immediate return to the Premier Leageu.
French forward Anthony Martial is also poised to leave Old Trafford after another injury-plagued season has hindered his availability once again.
Tottenham striker Harry Kane is an obvious long-term aim for Man United, although he may choose to extend his contract in North London.
Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos and former Ten Hag’s former charge Mohammed Kudus are also both highly coveted by the team’s management.
Osimhen Quotes Offer Boost to United’s Hopes
Nonetheless, Osimhen is believed to be their top transfer target due to his age profile and his willingness to move to the Premier League, as seen by his statements after being crowned “Best Foreign Athlete of the Year” by the Italian Foreign Press Association.
“I think playing in one of the top five leagues in the world is an amazing feeling for me,” Osimhen said.
“A lot of people worldwide consider the Premier League as the best and the strongest league but now I’m in one of the best leagues in the world which is the Italian Serie A,” the striker added.
“I’m working so hard to make sure that I achieve my dream of playing in the Premier League someday but as I said, it’s a process and I just want to keep on this momentum and continue to do well,” he stated.
Recruitment of Striker in Summer Window Required by United
Tottenham and Chelsea were previously linked with a deal for Osimhen before his 2020 transfer to Napoli, after he scored 18 goals for Lille in the 2019-20 season.
With his transition to Italian football, he has gone from strength to strength and is currently considered as one of the top strikers in the world.
With Weghorst and Martial likely leaving Old Trafford at the end of the season, only Marcus Rashford will remain as a realistic center forward option at the club,
However, Rashford’s preferred position is on the left side of the United attack and a senior central striker in United’s squad will be required if the club are to be at their strongest next season.
One obstacle that may hinder Ten Hag in his search for a number 9 is ManUnited’s ownership situation. The club is currently being assessed for sale by the Glazers, and potential buyers include Jim Ratcliffe and a Qatari buyer.
Until the ownership is certain, funds may not be made available at the club.
