This summer, Manchester United is allegedly interested in signing James Ward-Prowse of Southampton.
The 28-year-old has spent his whole career at St. Mary’s, having risen through the club’s development system prior to making his debut in 2011.
Since the summer of 2020, Ward-Prowse has been the captain of the Saints, and he recently marked his 400th appearance for his hometown club in last weekend’s 1-0 loss at West Ham United.
It is believed that the midfielder’s future on the South Coast is questionable, as Southampton is currently in danger of relegation from the Premier League.
Ward-Prowse Likely to Leave Saints If Relegated
A recent report indicates that Ward-Prowse will leave the Saints if Ruben Selles’s side is relegated to the Championship this season. The Saints are currently at the bottom of the table and are four points away from safety.
Although Southampton have struggled in the Premier League this season, Ward-Prowse has contributed with seven goals and two assists in 29 league games, as well as two goals and one assist in seven EFL Cup and FA Cup matches.
The set-piece expert has been rumored to join a larger club for some time, and according to a source, Liverpool are among a number of clubs that have scouted him this season.
Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa are also rumored to be interested in Ward-Prowse, with Spurs thought to be particularly fond of the England international with 11 caps.
Man United ‘Hell-Bent’ On Signing Ward-Prowse
According to Football Insider, Ward-Prowse has emerged as a summer target for Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag reportedly “hell-bent” on signing a new midfielder for the 2023-24 season.
It remains to be seen if Manchester United would pursue a permanent deal for Bayern Munich loanee Marcel Sabitzer this summer, and his likely exit could prompt them to increase their pursuit of midfielders such as Ward-Prowse.
Scott McTominay’s future has also been questioned in recent months, with United rumored to be open to offers between £25 million and £30 million for the Scotland international.
Midfielder James Ward-Prowse is under contract with Southampton until the summer of 2026, and it is believed that an offer in the region of £40 million might entice him away from Saint Mary’s.
United have also been linked with Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund, Declan Rice of West Ham, Ruben Neves of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Alexis Mac Allister of Brighton & Hove Albion, and Gabri Veiga of Real Betis ahead of the summer transfer season.
Following a 2-0 loss to Newcastle United at the weekend, Man United sustained a slight blow to their Champions League hopes for next season and will have to go on a positive run as the season comes to a close in order to secure European football ahead of next season.
Erik ten Hag’s outfit face Brentford at Old Trafford this evening in their next Premier League clash. United faced a humiliating defeat to the London side early in Ten Hag’s reign and will be looking to avenge themselves tonight.
However, Brentford will be no pushovers, the Bees have enjoyed a successful season in the English top-flight and are currently in ninth position, seven points off of Manchester United.
