Man City have started the 2023/24 campaign as they left the 2022/23 season, undefeated in the Premier League in their opening five games. The treble winners will be hoping to claim the top prize once more in the Champions League, starting with Red Star Belgrade at the Etihad.
The two sides have never met in their history, with Barak Bakhar hoping he can lead his side to a mammoth upset. Bundesliga side RB Leipzig and Swiss club BSC Young Boys make up the rest of Group G, which is anticipated to be led from the off by the current continental kings.
Team news: Manchester City
After winning the Champions League, the Premier League and the FA Cup last campaign, it seems difficult to imagine how Pep Guardiola could possibly top the highs of winning the treble. After all, no English team has ever managed a quadruple haul in a single season, although this City side has been dominant enough at home and abroad to potentially change that.
The Spaniard has started the season impeccably in England, with his squad winning all of their opening five games in the league, scoring 14 goals and conceding just three in a blistering start.
After bidding farewell to the likes of Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez in the summer, there were some question marks over who could replace their talents. However, there has been no noticeable period of adaptation for the squad to resume usual service.
On the injury front, Jack Grealish, John Stones and Mateo Kovacic are expected to be out of contention for tomorrow night’s game due to injury, joining long-term absentee Kevin De Bruyne on the sidelines.
Manchester City predicted lineup
Ederson; Walker, Akanji, Dias, Ake; Rodri, Silva; Foden, Alvarez, Doku; Haaland
Team news: Red Star Belgrade
There won’t be many tests as challenging as travelling to the home of the European champions, and Bakhar will be hoping to rebuild his side’s form.
The Serbian champions began their season well, however they have lost two of their previous three games in the Serbian Super Liga, including an away loss to Cukaricki last time out.
As such, Bakhar will be desperate for his side to remain rigid at the back, despite conceding seven times in the league so far. There are also no injuries to report on from Red Star Belgrade’s camp, with Bakhar having a full squad to choose from, as he goes to battle with Guardiola’s treble winners.
Red Star Belgrade predicted lineup
Glazer; Mijailovic, Dragovic, Rodic; Bukari, Krasso, Stamenic, Kangwa, Mitrovic; Lucic, Olayinka
Will Jeremy Doku make his Champions League debut for City?
Summer signing Jeremy Doku has been given the space to showcase his talents thanks to the injury of Grealish.
The Belgian made quite the impression on Saturday, when he scored during City’s 3-1 win over West Ham United at the London Stadium.

It’s been a while since the winger has featured in the Champions League, with his last spell in the tournament coming during the 2020/21 season, where he made six appearances for Rennes.
With Grealish set to miss the fixture, it could be the perfect opportunity for the 21-year-old to make his competition debut for the Citizens.
