Liverpool are keeping tabs on Lille striker Jonathan David, as reported by the Guardian. But Inter Milan are already lining up a January bid for the hugely promising attacker.
The two European heavyweights will be battling it out to sign French football’s most exciting youngster. The 21-year-old is Ligue 1’s leading scorer this season with ten goals. That is just one fewer than PSG trio Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar combined.
David has also been in fine form in Europe this season. He has netted twice in Lille’s Champions League campaign. One of those came in Tuesday night’s crucial victory over Salzburg. The striker scored the only goal of the game to send the French side top of Group G with just one match left to play.

His biggest honour yet, however, is lifting last season’s Ligue 1 trophy. Lille pulled out all the stops to shock PSG and win their first league title in ten years. Veteran striker Burak Yilmaz led the way for the club with 16 goals. But David chipped in with 13 to help his side to a memorable trophy.
David shining for club and country
The Canadian has already amassed 12 goals in all competitions for Lille this season. That’s just one fewer than the entirety of the last campaign.
But even that tally is outdone by his exploits for Canada. He has netted 18 goals in 24 games for his country. Seven of those have arrived in his 12 matches in 2021.
Ligue 1 has plenty of exciting youngsters ready to take on world football, such as Nice striker Amine Gouiri, or Monaco midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni. Also on the list are defenders Benoit Badiashile, Sven Botman and Boubacar Kamara. David is right up there among the very best of the ones to watch.
Liverpool in need of attacking reinforcements
It will be very difficult for the Reds to land the striker in the January transfer window. It is a period historically known for landing big transfers, particularly when compared to the summer transfer window.
But it could be an option for Liverpool. They are set to lose Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah from their attacking roster during the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. That is, of course, if the competition goes ahead. Doubts have been raised due to Covid-19 and hosting rights issues.
David certainly wouldn’t want to be second fiddle when the star pair return in February. But would Klopp consider the youngster as a long-term replacement for Roberto Firmino?
The Brazilian is a fan favourite at Anfield. His continuous running and defensive work, combined with his selfless attacking play and stunning finishing, has helped create many wonderful moments for Liverpool over the years.
But his manager has seemingly opted for Diogo Jota in more recent times. Whether or not it is a temporary situation remains to be seen. One thing that is certain, however, is that the Reds would be much worse off without their star Brazilian striker.
