According to reports, Liverpool Football Club have set the asking price for defender Joel Matip at £15 million as they prepare to sell the center-back this summer.
Matip has contributed 10 goals and six assists for Liverpool since joining the Reds in 2016 after previously playing for Schalke. In total, he has made 181 appearances for the club in all competitions.
Matip was recalled to the starting lineup for Liverpool’s away match against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend after spending the previous three games on the bench.
This came about because Ibrahima Konate joined fellow central defender Virgil van Dijk in the treatment room. Matip was dropped previous to that as Liverpool continued to struggle in the English top-flight.
The defender, however, went on to have a terrible afternoon at Wolves, capping it off by scoring an own goal that set Wolves on their way to an easy 3-0 victory.
The performance of the 31-year-old athlete garnered considerable criticism, and there are some who are concerned about the terrible run of form he has had in recent times.
Matip has only started seven games in the Premier League this season as a result of a mixture of selection decisions and injury concerns. Because of this, Matip has slid down the pecking order at the Merseyside club, and it is possible that his time there is coming to an end.
Liverpool Open to Selling Defender
A recent report suggested that Liverpool are open to listen to proposals for the player during the summer months despite the fact that his current contract is slated to expire in June of 2024.
The Reds also want to avoid a scenario in which Matip goes on a free transfer in less than 18 months’ time; hence, they have apparently fixed a price in the hopes of acquiring his services before that time comes.
According to Football Insider, the Reds are hoping to receive offers for the experienced defender that are somewhere in the neighborhood of £15 million.
During his time at Liverpool, Matip has amassed a great deal of success, culminating in the acquisition of seven trophies, the most notable of which are a Premier League championship and a Champions League trophy.
Matip Could Start Upcoming Merseyside Derby
Matip’s status at the club is unclear, but he has a shot of starting Monday’s Merseyside derby against Everton, in what will be a huge game for both Liverpool clubs.
After winning only one of their previous four league matches, the Reds will be trying to break out of their slump when they take the field against their rivals. Though they would normally be expected to win, Everton will be unpredictable.
New Everton boss Sean Dyche saw the side to a win in his first game in charge against league leaders Arsenal last weekend.
The Reds are currently in 10th place in the Premier League table, 11 points behind the top four teams in the league’s standings. They will feel they need all three points on Monday if they are to keep their fan base on side.
