Liverpool have been linked with moving for Barcelona’s teen star Gavi after the La Liga giants were unable to register the youngster’s new professional contract.

The 18-year-old is a regular member of both the Blaugrana and the Spanish national team and has emerged as one of the brightest talents in world football in recent years.

In September, he signed a lucrative new contract with Barcelona that included a staggering €1 billion (£866 million) release clause.

La Liga declined to confirm the transaction due to the club’s continuous financial difficulties.

Barcelona Fail to Register Gavi’s Lucrative Contract

Despite Barca’s efforts to register the teenager on professional terms despite the league’s stance, a Catalan court has decided against the club, reverting his registration to that of a youth-team graduate.

The Catalan club failed to submit the player’s new contract inside the allotted time frame, missing the league’s ‘grace period’ by one day. The club can appeal this ruling, but the matter is now in a stalemate.

The judicial finding, which Barca contest and insist is not a final decision, means that the enormous release clause in Gavi’s new contract is presently invalid, which might allow one of the 18-year-many old’s admirers to sign him for free in the summer.

The midfielder is regarded as a feisty and aggressive player and is frequently deployed in a forward position.

He is considered as a natural successor to Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta at Camp Nou, with the naturally gifted and technically adept Pedri, another adolescent Spain international.

Unlike Pedri, who was signed from Las Palmas in 2020, Gavi has been with Barcelona since he was 11 years old after being snatched from the Real Betis junior program. As a result, he has a strong connection to the club and is unlikely to seek a transfer.

Liverpool, along with Manchester City, are major admirers of the player, according to a story in The Times, and have been encouraged by the current development in his contract status, which may allow them to pounce.

Losing Gavi would be devastating for Barcelona, who have been warned that they will be unable to acquire new players in the summer unless they can raise £178 million.

This summer, the Reds intend to strengthen their midfielder.

They have been linked to Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund on multiple occasions in the past, with Jürgen Klopp believed to be a big fan.

In the meantime, Manchester City and Manchester United are also interested in signing him, but Real Madrid has emerged as the favorite for his signature.

The midfielder’s transfer value continues to rise as a result of Bellingham’s performance for England in the most recent World Cup, which prompted Liverpool to increase their pursuit of him.

Klopp has acknowledged that the Reds require change and is planning a summer squad overhaul, with an emphasis on their aging midfield.

Last summer, the team missed out on signing Aurelien Tchouameni to Real Madrid and the French midfielder has gone on to star for his international side as well as Los Blancos.
