Liverpool Line Up £40m Move for Serbian Serie A Star

Liverpool Line Up £40m Move for Serbian Serie A Star

Liverpool are reportedly considering a summer transfer move for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Jurgen Klopp is looking to bolster his midfield for the upcoming season after a poor 2022-23 campaign left the club fighting for a top-four finish rather than the championship.

Liverpool have also expressed considerable interest in Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham, but are ‘increasingly unlikely’ to sign the England international because to worries regarding the transfer value and the financial strength of their competitors.

According to the Italian publication Calciomercato, they could now shift their focus elsewhere, and Milinkovic-Savic is a possible replacement.

The Serbian is nearing the conclusion of his ninth season at Lazio but has yet to sign a new contract, with his current agreement scheduled to expire next year.

It is believed that he is unwilling to leave the Serie A club on a free transfer in 2024, creating the prospect that he could go this year for a lower transfer cost.

Lazio had placed a heavy price tag on the Serbian star in an effort to deter potential suitors, but a fee in the region of €50 million (£44 million) could be enough to convince them to sell this summer.

Arsenal and Juventus have also been connected with Milinkovic-Savic in recent weeks, and according to Calciomercato, the Italian giants could yet make a move for the 28-year-old, who is regarded as their “dream signing.”

At this point in his career, it is believed that a move abroad is more likely for Milinkovic-Savic, giving Liverpool hope that they may sign him if they intensify their pursuit in the coming months.

The Premier League team has three central midfielders whose contracts expire this summer. Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and James Milner are all free agents.

Arthur Melo’s underwhelming loan agreement with Juventus expires in June.

Therefore the club are set to do a major midfield revamp of their midfield this summer.

Milinkovic-Savic has experienced a good career in Italy, scoring 64 goals in 330 games for Lazio. He might strengthen this part of the field for Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

He has won the Coppa Italia once, scoring in the 2019 final, and the Italian Super Cup twice during his time in Rome.

Liverpool Still in Champions League Contention

The Reds are currently placed in sixth position in the English Premier League and are well in the running to compete for the Champions League places.

The side are currently seven points off of Europe but if they can make up the difference before the end of the season they could make the signings they require to compete with their rivals next season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side face Man City next and will need to be at their best to land a blow against their closest competitors from the last few years.

A win for Liverpool would be a serious blow to City’s hopes of retaining their league title. The Manchester club currently sit in second, nine points behind Arsenal though they have a game at hand.

More tough fixtures await after that, versus Chelsea and Arsenal, in what will be a season defining run of games for Liverpool.
