Liverpool keen on Wolves midfielder

After their resounding defeat to Brentford yesterday, many pundits and fans have been calling for Liverpool to bolster their midfield options during the January transfer window.

Midfield has been an area of concern for Liverpool for some time and they have been linked with a plethora of names in recent times, including Enzo Fernandez and Jude Bellingham. While Fernandez is seemingly on his way to Chelsea, a move for Bellingham is only going to be viable in the summer.

January reinforcements are considered imperative if Liverpool are to turn their season around and finish in the Premier League’s top four. If they don’t, then it’s unlikely that they’ll even be able to make a move for Bellingham and other players of his calibre this summer.

According to SkySportsNews, Liverpool are said to be weighing up a move for Wolves midfielder, Matheus Nunes. The Portuguese international only signed for the midlands club six months ago and would demand a fee north of £40m.

Second time lucky?

According to a report on SkySportsNews, while Liverpool are aware that midfield additions are needed, they want to ensure that they aren’t spending money on the wrong player. As a result, they are prepared to wait until the summer unless the right player at the right price becomes available.

It is said that Nunes is one of the midfield targets on Liverpool’s radar but the £50m price tag could deter Liverpool, particularly as they refused to spend £38m on the same player last summer.

Before he made the move to Wolves, both Manchester City and Liverpool were said to have been keen on the former Sporting Lisbon man. Coming back six months later and paying £12 more than what they previously said no to wouldn’t be a great look for Liverpool’s transfer team but they have may have to bite the bullet in a bid to save their season.

Forcing Wolves to part ways with Nunes won’t be easy regardless, particularly with the midlands side in a scrap for survival at the bottom of the Premier League.

Three new midfielders

On SkySports yesterday, Jamier Carragher suggested that Jurgen Klopp needs to add as many as three midfielders to his squad as he watched his former team lose 3-1 to Brentford.

Liverpool have only made one midfield signing in the past four years – Thiago from Bayern Munich – and age is seemingly catching up with them. Fabinho looks like his legs have gone, Milner turns 37 tomorrow, Thiago can’t stay fit and Keita and Oxlade Chamberlain are set to leave on free transfers in the summer.

That leaves Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones as the only midfielders under the age of 29 and there are question marks over the suitability and ability of the pair.

With the ownership of the club in doubt, it’s unclear how much more money will be made available for transfers this month after the signing of Cody Gakpo from PSV. Although the dutchman should give Liverpool a much-needed boost in front of goal, he does little to solve their issues in the middle of the park.
