Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has likened forward Darwin Nunez to a racehorse after his fine display in the 1-0 victory over Fulham. The attacker helped the Reds secure a narrow win over the Cottagers at Anfield on Wednesday evening.
The three points helped Klopp’s men continue their rise up the Premier League table, with the Reds now sitting fifth in the standings with four matches to go.
Liverpool attacker ‘like a racehorse’

Klopp was asked if he was pleased with the attacker’s display, with the manager waxing lyrical about the speedy and direct Nunez. “Absolutely,” Klopp said after the match, as quoted by the official Liverpool website. “I think for us it’s super-important.
“You could see in the beginning, defending the centre against Fulham is really important because Palhinha is there and that is their connector, get [him] on the ball. We were a bit too early out there from Darwin, we tried to fix that, but he wanted and he was like a racehorse – go, go, go, go for everybody.
“We opened up and that’s where we struggle slightly, where they could control it for moments. We could sort that and apart from that he played a really good game, he was always a proper option for us and we needed that.”
Klopp likes Nunez and Salah link up
Klopp continued to explain how effective Nunez was when it came to the performance of the team as a whole, with the Uruguayan linking up well with Mohamed Salah.
The duo were joined by Luis Diaz in a strong front three for the hosts, with all three earning plenty of applause from the Liverpool faithful as they were withdrawn by their manager at various stages of the second half.
“One of the main things we had to do tonight was offer in behind, we had three really quick players there and I liked the situation pretty early in the game when Mo received the ball deep, chipped it in behind and Darwin can go there,” added Klopp.
“I don’t know exactly what was the result of that, but maybe a corner, which is good as well. Yes, he played a good game.”
Liverpool going strong at key moment
Liverpool have been nowhere near their best this season, but a string of positive results has seen the momentum shift their way as the campaign rapidly draws to a close.
The Reds have now won their last five league matches, and are now just four points off Manchester United in fourth. A top four spot does, however, seem unlikely given how the Red Devils have two games in hand over Liverpool.
But as always, Klopp will not give up the chase of the club’s fierce rivals, with anything seemingly possible in what has been another crazy Premier League campaign.
Liverpool can only focus on their own matches between now and the end of the season, which involve meetings with Brentford, Leicester City, Aston Villa and Southampton.
If the Reds can continue winning matches and secure four victories from those four games, then who knows where they will end up.
