Liverpool will seek to get their faltering Premier League season back on track when they meet Everton in the Merseyside derby on Monday night.
The Reds haven’t won a Premier League game since the turn of the year, and they meet the Toffees after a humiliating 3-0 loss to Wolves last time out. Meanwhile, Sean Dyche’s men are hoping to build on their recent victory over league leaders Arsenal in his second game in charge.
New Injury Troubles for Liverpool
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been given a big blow ahead of the match, with yet another vital player ruled out with an injury.
The news comes just as the side’s huge injury list appeared to be shrinking, after the manager revealed that Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino were both close to returning from injury, while Virgil van Dijk had stepped up his recuperation recently.
However, it has now been revealed that midfielder Thiago Alcantara will be out for a month due to a hip flexor injury. Klopp said on Friday that the Spaniard had missed training but did not specify the nature of his injury.
It has now been confirmed that he will be out for an extended period of time, which will almost certainly include both legs of the Reds’ Champions League last-16 tie with Real Madrid.
Klopp Insists He will Stay after this Season
Klopp may have been at Liverpool for seven years, but he insists his time there isn’t coming to an end. He departed after that era in charge at both Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, and despite the fact that things are challenging again, he has no plans to leave in the coming months.
“I understand when people say ‘oh seven years there (Mainz), seven years there (Dortmund), but that has nothing to do with it,” Klopp explained to reporters ahead of Monday’s game.
“This situation is totally different for different reasons. At Mainz it was a career step as well, at Dortmund I was really exhausted in that moment,” he added, “But I am neither nor in this moment.”
If Klopp remains in charge of the Kop, he will have to begin the laborious task of fully rebuilding his squad. And club executives plan to start by recruiting a new head of research.
Dr. Ian Graham now holds the job, however he is set to leave at the end of the season. Graham is credited for assisting the recruitment department in the recruitment of players such as Sadio Mane, Mo Salah, and Andy Robertson.
While the present holder serves his notice term, Liverpool are searching for a replacement among a pool of experts. According to reports, the Reds are looking to hire someone who is already in the game and is considered as a leader in the football statistics sector.
In terms of players, the side have been linked with signing Napoli’s star striker Victor Osimhen in the summer. The player has scored 23 goals in 24 appearances for the Italian side this season and could depart Serie A after this season. However, there will be plenty of competition amongst English sides for his signature.
