Real Madrid have rekindled its interest in one of Chelsea’s star forwards as it has become clear to the La Liga giants that it’s main target to replace Karim Benzema is unwilling to depart the English Premier League.
Los Blancos had intended to make a move for Harry Kane this summer as the Tottenham Hotspur talisman’s contract runs down but Madrid have since shifted to prioritizing another striker as it looks unlikely Kane will move to Spain.
Instead, this year’s Champions League semi-finalists have decided to target Chelsea’s German striker Kai Havertz, a player the club had shown interest in before.
Kane move to Manchester United edges closer
This summer is likely Tottenham’s last chance to cash in on the striker before he becomes a free agent the following year. Kane’s 29-year-old contract expires at Tottenham next summer. They would prefer to transfer him to a club outside of England as opposed to a direct competitor.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is on high alert to acquire a central striker at Old Trafford, and he has the England international on his shopping list. United are desperate to acquire an elite central striker and believe Kane’s contract predicament will facilitate a transfer.
However, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is not eager to supervise the striker’s departure to a Premier League rival. An exit to a prominent European club, such as Real Madrid, would eliminate this obstacle and prevent Kane from facing Tottenham in the upcoming season, as Spurs have failed to qualify for European competition.
Karim Benzema, who was linked to a move to Saudi Arabia this week, is now 35 years old, and Real Madrid have agreed to sign Palmeiras’ young Brazilian prospect Endrick as a long term replacement.
However, the teen cannot join the club for another two years, making Kane the ideal candidate to bridge the divide between the two talents.
Marca reports that Kane remains a target for Real Madrid, but there is little optimism that a deal can be reached due to Spurs’ stance and the striker’s desire to remain in the Premier League, where he could break Alan Shearer’s all-time goals record.
Real Madrid line up summer move for Havertz
It is reported that an interest in Havertz is gaining traction in the Spanish capital as an alternative to Kane, as discussed at a transfer meeting this week.
The German international agreed to terms with the club in 2020, but ultimately chose to sign with Chelsea instead due to a more lucrative offer.
Havertz has labored with consistency during his time with the Blues, but he scored the game-winning goal against Manchester City in the Champions League final in 2021. His contract with Chelsea has three years remaining, but his future is uncertain.
Mauricio Pochettino is the latest manager to take charge at Stamford Bridge and will have input on the destinies of many of the club’s players.
With the imminent entrance of RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku to Chelsea, the Blues may be tempted to offload Havertz if Pochettino is not interested in keeping the German.
Havertz could be one of several players to depart the bloated Chelsea squad this summer as the side look to leave behind last season’s troubles and make up for the vast sums of money spent, which were not realized on the field of play.
