Former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch is the favorite candidate to succeed Nathan Jones as the manager of Southampton.
Eight days have passed since Marsch was fired by Leeds, and while negotiations have taken place, there is still work to be done before a solution is reached.
Saints fired Jones on Sunday, a day after losing to 10-man Wolves and falling to the bottom of the Premier League standings.
The struggling side will play Chelsea away on Saturday, followed by Leeds a week later. As Leeds boss, Marsch defeated the Blues early in the season and the Saints could be hoping for a similar result.
Southampton Hope Marsch will Reenergize Club
Southampton’s board have had attention from a number of other candidates, including ex-Everton boss Frank Lampard and DC United manager Wayne Rooney, but they view Marsch’s style being the best fit to galvanise the club’s team as they attempt to avoid relegation.
The Saints have only 15 points through 22 Premier League games this season, with only four victories, three draws, and 15 losses.
Marsch is viewed as an upbeat motivator and coach with Premier League experience.
He comes from the same line of Red Bull coaches as former Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl and should be able to swiftly gain the players’ support for his strategies.
Marsch was considered a potential replacement for Hasenhuttl, who was fired in November, even before Sport Republic purchased the club last year.
Leeds were 16th in the Premier League when he took over at the end of February, and he helped them avoid relegation to the Championship with a 2-1 victory at Brentford on the penultimate day of the season.
In addition to managing RB Leipzig, New York Red Bulls, and Red Bull Salzburg, the American has also managedd RB Leipzig, New York Red Bulls, and Red Bull Salzburg.
Marsch’s Downfall at Leeds United
Seven consecutive Premier League games without a victory led to his dismissal after less than a year in command of Leeds. Leeds had been performing well but simply could not find goals to secure three points, which led to Marsch’s downfall.
Jesse Marsch desires the position because he feels he has unfinished business in the Premier League.
The coach would surely bring positivity to the club, something the young players require. They must also be allowed the freedom to play the upbeat, aggressive, yet attractive brand of soccer that so many of them expected to play under Hasenhuttl when they joined the team last summer.
Many would view Marsch’s appointment as odd or underwhelming but the American manager did manage to keep Leeds afloat in the Premier League last season. The Yorkshire side were not in as much trouble as Southampton currently find themselves however.
Any management at this time is a risk, as is any new hire. But Marsch will fight and, if necessary, will die heroically.
Saints fans have lacked a cause to support for a very long time and Marsch’s upbeat attitude could be the answer to their woes this season.
