Is Spurs hero Harry Kane the striker Man City are missing?

Manchester City remain keen on Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Manchester outfit are reportedly in the market for a forward. And with Erling Haaland being watched by just about every top club in Europe, City could look closer to home for their next marquee signing.

Harry Kane

Pep Guardiola’s side slipped up for the first time in weeks on Saturday. They drew 1-1 with Southampton.

Liverpool meanwhile won their meeting with Crystal Palace on Sunday. The Reds closed the point at the top to nine points. Chelsea also won, defeating Spurs 2-0. The Blues are 10 points behind City in third.

Guardiola won’t be immediately stressing about the situation. But it would be foolish to rule out the manager bringing in another world-class talent to strengthen his squad.

It is well known that City have been watching Kane for some time now. Whether or not they make a move for the striker this month remains to be seen.

Is Harry Kane the right man for City?

It certainly hasn’t been Kane’s most productive season in front of goal. He has just five goals from his 19 league games this season.

But his numbers from previous seasons speak for themselves. Kane has 171 goals from 265 Premier League matches. The tally puts him seventh in the all-time list. It’s just four behind Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.

The Spurs hero has hit astonishing totals over the years. He found the net 30 times in the 2017/18 league campaign, having hit 29 the season before. Kane also has three Golden Boots.

Moreover, he has proven that he is much more than just a goalscorer. The striker has constantly dropped deep throughout his time at Spurs, holding the ball up and linking up with his teammates in order to play his part in counter attacks. His lethal partnership with Son Heung-min has been key to the club’s success in the final third.

Such an involved and influential player is exactly what Guardiola is looking for. The striker would most certainly link up expertly with City’s long list of hugely talented midfielders and attackers.

Guardiola wants a world-class striker

Man City have scored 55 league goals this season. It’s the second-highest total, three behind Liverpool. Guardiola will not be worrying about the tally itself, but rather about where those goals are coming from.

Gabriel Jesus is the club’s only recognised senior striker. And he has just two league goals this season. Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva lead the way with seven each. Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez then follow with six each.

Even centre-back Aymeric Laporte (3) has more goals than Jesus. And the Brazilian is level with other centre-back Ruben Dias and Ferran Torres, who has made a switch to Barcelona.

The club have been needing a player to lead the line ever since Sergio Aguero left for Barcelona. Kane has all the attributes to be that player.

Given City’s ability to create goals thanks to their star-studded lineup, it’s fair to say that Kane could hit 200 Premier League goals much quicker in Manchester than in north London.
