Manchester United’s on-loan striker Wout Weghorst has responded to his critics by claiming he is “doing a good job for the team.”
The Dutch forward joined Erik ten Hag’s team on loan from Burnley in January after his loan stint at Besiktas, where he scored nine goals in 18 appearances, was cut short.
Since then, he has been an integral part of a revitalized United team under his compatriot, starting 18 of 18 possible games in all competitions.
Despite this, Paul Scholes and Richard Keys have criticized him for not being good enough for the club because he has scored only two goals in eight Premier League matches.
Weghorst responded to his critics by asserting that the fact Ten Hag has made him a regular starter for United proves he is more than capable of playing for the club.
“That’s a lot of matches and it shows the trust in me,” he said, “It also shows that I am doing a good job for the team.”
“That was the thing I wanted when I came here – to contribute and try and help the club to be successful to win trophies,” he said, “We have one now.”
“We have two more to go with the Europa League and FA Cup, and we want to get as high as possible in the table and definitely top four for the Champions League,” Weghorst said.
“So it just shows me that I am being part of it,” he added.
The forward frequently leads United’s press from the front and creates space for other attackers, such as Marcus Rashford, earning appreciation from fans for his contribution to the team as a whole.
Ten Hag has also employed him as a number 10 due to his skill in distribution.
Scholes Criticism of Weghorst as United Striker
But, his opponents in the media, particularly Scholes, have utilized his off-the-ball work as a club to beat him.
“Weghorst is in the team to be a defender,” Scholes recently stated to Premier League Productions
“You’re talking about a Manchester United No 10 or a centre-forward, he’s in the team to be defensive,” Scholes said.
“He’s the one who runs about and rats about and everybody likes playing with him because he does that,” the former Man United midfielder said.
“But quality-wise as well you’ve got to have a certain level of quality to play for Man United… it’s not there,” he added.
Weghorst is currently on international duty with Holland.
The country have Euro 2024 qualification matches against France and Gibraltar in the coming week, though some of their best players, such as Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo, have been ruled out due to a virus n the camp.
Weghorst Says United Want ‘Two More Trophies’
Following the international break, Weghorst will return to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils return to action on April 2 with a crucial away match against Newcastle.
“We have two more (trophies) to go with the Europa League and FA Cup, and we want to get as high as possible in the table and definitely top four for the Champions League,” Weghorst said of his side’s aims.
United’s next fixture come against a tough opponent in Newcastle on April 2nd.
The game could have an additional factor following Man United’s victory over the side in the EFL Cup Final last month.
