Once again it was Brentford who stole the show in gameweek 2 in the Fantasy Premier League with both Wissa and Mbuemo collecting a high tally between them. With Brentford back at home against Crystal Palace, there’s no doubt a few captain armbands will be thrown at either of Brentford’s attackers.
Manchester United host Nottingham Forest who were mightily poor on the road last campaign, while Man City take a trip to Sheffield to face the Blades. However, the standout tie will see Newcastle United host Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, where Fantasy managers will have to be clever in order to win maximum points from that fixture.
Let’s go through my fantasy tips as well as reflect on the highest scorers from gameweek 2.
FPL Team Tips for Gameweek 3
Undoubtedly there will be plenty of eyes on Pep’s Man City against Sheffield United – but will he look to rotate once more?
With Kevin de Bruyne out injured, it may pay to stick with Julian Alvarez who came in to replace him and scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Newcastle. With the license to roam in behind Haaland, the 23-year-old World Cup winner is one of the deadliest finishers in the Premier League and can look to add to his tally in gameweek 3.
Arsenal relied on their captain Martin Odegaard from 12 yards to edge past Crystal Palace on Monday night. However, it may be worth throwing in the ex-Real Madrid midfielder as Arsenal welcome London rivals Fulham to the Emirates.
Fulham look lost this season without Willian and Mitrovic, as we saw when Brentford put three past them last week. Odegaard was one of the highest point scorers last season and it’ll likely be the nimble Norwegian who can thread a key pass or two and collect more points for himself in gameweek 3.
My last tip comes from Old Trafford as Manchester United host Nottingham Forest. Although Forest looked in much better shape when narrowly losing 2-1 to Arsenal, they looked fragile at times against Sheffield United last Friday and United will look to exploit that.
In the last four meetings since 2022, Forest have failed to score a single goal. With Raphael Varane having scored in United’s season opener against Wolves, and with Steve Cooper’s side proving vulnerable from set pieces throughout the 2022/23 campaign, it may be worth adding the towering centre back to bag at least a clean sheet.
GW3 Captain Tip: Go with this new Chelsea signing
With Chelsea back at Stamford Bridge and hosting Premier League new boys Luton Town, it appears sensible to choose one of Pochettino’s attacking players this gameweek.
There’s a lot of faith being shown in 22-year-old Nicolas Jackson to lead the line for Chelsea this season, and this presents the perfect opportunity for him to get off the mark nice and early.
Priced at just £7.0m, Jackson is one of the cheapest starting strikers to date on Fantasy Premier League and it only looks a matter of time before he gets off the mark.
What did we learn from FPL GW2?
Although Chelsea disappointed in gameweek 2 in Fantasy Premier League, one of their young new stars stood out. However, although Carney Chukwuemeka scored and looking rather promising, he’s look set for a spell on the sidelines – he may be one to keep on the shortlist for later in the season.
Mo Salah managed to score against Bournemouth after his penalty was originally saved, and despite links to Saudi Arabia, he’ll still be in plenty of teams – although a trip away to Newcastle won’t be easy for Jurgen Klopp’s side. Diogo Jota collected 12 points for Liverpool as he was also on the scoresheet, and it could be a big season for the winger after missing large parts last season due to injury.
However, away from the so-called big clubs, once again it was Brentford’s Mbeumo who stole the show, collecting 16 points after his brace. Teammate Yoane Wissa also bagged himself 11 points after opening the scoring against Fulham in their 3-0 victory – both will no doubt prove popular in gameweek 3.
When is the FPL deadline this week?
With Chelsea vs Luton kicking off at 20:00 on Friday 25th August, be sure to not miss this week’s deadline. You’ll have until 19:00 to make your changes for gameweek 3.
