Five Chelsea January transfer targets amid injury crisis

Chelsea are still in the hunt for this season’s Premier League title. That is despite a slip up in recent weeks.

Thomas Tuchel has created a well-drilled outfit. The German has his side playing almost exactly how he wants them to. The defence and goalkeeper have been very difficult to get past. And the attacking side of things has been equally impressive.

They are, however, eight points behind Manchester City in the standings. Moreover, Chelsea are now suffering from a handful of unfortunate injuries. Reece James became the latest to join the growing list of those sidelined in Wednesday’s meeting with Brighton.

Rumours have unsurprisingly been circulating ahead of the January transfer window. Here are five players Chelsea are reportedly targeting to help knock City off top spot:

Lucas Digne

Everton left-back Lucas Digne is being eyed by the Blues, as reported by 90min. It is a short-term option in a bid to provide cover for Ben Chilwell. The England star could miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury.

Digne will, however, be difficult to land on loan. And it is hard to imagine that Chelsea will pay a large sum to land the 28-year-old on a permanent basis.

Nicolas Tagliafico

Unsurprisingly, another left-back has been linked with the Blues due to their current situation. Fans and indeed Tuchel are not entirely convinced that Marcos Alonso is the player to start in the role. The Daily Mail claims that Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico is an option.

The Argentine has 18 months left on his contract. He could be available in the very near future, rather than the Dutch outfit losing him for free. A number of other English clubs are, however, interested.

Sergino Dest

Continuing on the theme of full-backs, the Express claims that Barcelona right-back Sergino Dest is another option. He will reportedly cost in the region of £30m.

The American is a relatively new face at the Spanish club. But he finds himself in a battle for the spot with legendary right-back Dani Alves. Furthermore, rumours are circulating that Chelsea veteran Cesar Azpilicueta could make a switch to the Camp Nou. A potential swap could, therefore, be on the cards.

Matthias Ginter

The Express also reports that Chelsea are keeping tabs on Matthias Ginter. The Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back could be leaving the Bundesliga side for cheap, compared to other central defenders across Europe.

Both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen may exit Stamford Bridge soon given their contract situations. So Ginter is certainly an option to replace any Blues defender who leaves.

Ousmane Dembele

Chelsea are monitoring the situation of Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele, as reported by Football Italia. The London outfit could potentially lose the likes of Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic in the near future.

And that would free up some space for Barca’s attacker Dembele. The arrival of Ferran Torres in Spain could also see Dembele lose out on game time. Additionally, the French winger may be a more realistic option than Blues legend Eden Hazard.
