Alan Hutton has suggested that Antonio Conte was justified in his recent criticism of his Tottenham players at a press conference following the side’s draw with Southampton.
In an interview he gave to soccer outlet Football Insider, the former Spurs right-back expressed concern that Conte’s team may lose out on a top-four finish after another lackluster campaign.
The Italian criticized the club, players, and staff in a furious press conference following the weekend’s 3-3 draw with relegation-threatened Southampton.
Daniel Levy made it obvious to Conte last week that he would not be able to sign two of his top summer transfer targets and it has been reported that because of this Conte unleashed his stunning diatribe.
The 53-year-old desired to bring Stefan de Vrij and Romelu Lukaku to Tottenham in the summer in an effort to transform Spurs into a title contender, but Levy informed him that the club would not authorize the signings, adding to his displeasure.
Although though Conte’s Spurs are presently fourth in the Premier League, fifth-placed Newcastle United are only two points behind and have two games in hand on the London club.
It is anticipated that he will be fired by the club because they fear he will not be able to coax the best performance from the players he has so publicly disparaged and Tottenham will miss out on vital European funds.
Hutton’s Take on Conte’s Speech: ‘He is a Winner’
Hutton, however, is bewildered by the entire affair.
“It is a really strange one,” he said, “The season has been up and down, yet again it is going to be a trophyless season so it is difficult for supporters.”
“Conte is obviously under pressure as well. He was brought to the club to win something and that is not happening,” he stated, “As it stands are they going to get top four? I am not so sure.”
“He is questioning the players’ mentality. He is a winner, he has proven that, the players have not for a number of years. His contract is running down and it is a very strange situation.“
Emerson Royal’s Reaction to Conte Rant
Emerson Royal has stated that Antonio Conte has a “explosive side,” but he has a positive rapport with Tottenham’s manager.
Prior to Pedro Porro’s recent inclusion in the starting lineup, the Brazilian, who was signed by Fabio Paratici in August of 2021, was a regular starter for Spurs.
Emerson was asked about his manager in the wake of the dramatic post-match press conference following the 3-3 draw at Southampton. Emerson is back on international duty with Brazil after an excellent start to 2023 with Tottenham.
Emerson has discussed his relationship with the 53-year-old and what it’s like to work with the seasoned manager.
“As for Conte, I have a good relationship with him, he’s not that coach that we have a very close relationship with, of talking a lot, it’s his way,” Emerson explained the right wing-back when speaking to Globo Esporte.
“He’s a coach who wants to help everyone, instructs, he shows the role he wants in each one’s game. I don’t see any problem, I have a good relationship with him,” Royal added.
“Conte is a coach who has this explosive side of him, a personality he created, but he is a coach who tries to help us as much as possible.”
