‘We should do this more’ – Erling Haaland advises Guardiola after record-breaking night

Erling Haaland has urged Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to press more after the club thrashed RB Leipzig in the Champions League round of 16.

The young striker was the star of the show, netting an incredible five goals in the 7-0 victory, three of which came in the opening 45 minutes.

The hosts were in scintillating form, winning the game 8-1 over the two legs after drawing 1-1 in Germany in the first leg last month.

Haaland urges City to press more

Haaland broke several records on the night with his stunning performance, namely becoming the fastest and youngest player to reach 30 Champions League goals, aged just 22.

He also broke the record for most goals in a single season for Man City, with Haaland now on 39 goals from his 36 games in all competitions.

Moreover, the striker became just the third player to score five goals in a single Champions League match, following in the footsteps of Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano.

Haaland now has more hat-tricks in the competition than the likes of Thierry Henry, Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, a remarkable feat at such a young age.

Following the long list of records, the formidable Norwegian has urged his manager to play like they did on Tuesday night much more often, as reported by BBC Sport.

Speaking after the victory, Haaland said: “We worked on the pressing yesterday, especially at home we have to run and press. We are so good at getting the ball.

“In my opinion, we should do this more. I think we can use this more, there is more space for the guys in between to play. Compared to last year and now we can play with a striker in behind and that’s what I’m trying to bring.”

Haaland ‘blurry’ in his head

Haaland netted his fifth hat-trick of the season against Leipzig, with the German outfit and indeed everyone watching far and wide simply blown away by the forward.

He has bagged 10 goals from his six Champions League matches for City, with the striker also scoring 28 goals from his 26 Premier League games.

Another strike in the League Cup earlier this season takes his tally to 39 for the season, with no one able to guess just how much that will rise in the weeks and months to come.

Man City remain in contention for the Premier League title, while they are also now into the last eight of the Champions League, as well as remaining in the FA Cup.

All eyes were on Haaland last night, but the striker has admitted that he can barely remember netting five times, such was the chaos that took place at the Etihad.

When asked which goal was his favourite, he replied: “I’m blurry in my head. I remember shooting but not thinking. I was so tired after my celebrations.

“My super strength is scoring goals. Should I be honest? A lot of goals today, I didn’t think. I was just trying to get it into the back of the net. A lot of it is being quick in the mind and trying to put it where the goalkeeper is not.”
