Erling Haaland Can Match Dixie Dean’s Incredible Record of 60 Goals

Eight matches remain until the curtain is drawn on the 2022/23 Premier League campaign. Erling Haaland already has 30 goals to his name and is gaining ground on Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s tally of 34 strikes.

The Norwegian has been spectacular since joining from Borussia Dortmund. He allayed fears that Pep Guardiola can play with a centre forward and lived up to his billing. He already has 44 goals to his name and it seems he is shattering records every day.

Shearer and Cole’s Premier League tally is within his grasp. Haaland scores over a goal in English top-flight football as no one has been able to tame him. He was at it again against Southampton, scoring a brace in City’s 4-1 demolishing job.

Haaland to kick Shearer and Cole out

It is only a matter of time before the City ace cements his name in the history books. Avoiding a season-ending injury, Haaland should above to make the Premier League’s highest goalscorer record his. Shearer is content with the City forward taking his record away from him and is excited about what else he can achieve.

Writing in his article for the Athletic, the former Newcastle and Blackburn attacker calculated the computations for Haaland. The Premier League all-time top goalscorer believes more is to come from the 22-year-old. City are fighting on three fronts and has enough fixtures to give him the chance to go beyond the 50-goal mark and be remembered alongside 60-goal hero Dixie Dean.

“At a minimum, City have another 12 fixtures this season and potentially up to four more on top,” Shearer commented.

“If he can stay fit, Haaland will obliterate the Premier League record I share with Andy Cole of 34 goals in a single season and at his current rate of averages in all competitions, with 44 in 38 appearances, he will storm past 50.”

“Even that may be a disservice to him (scoring 50),” he added. “Who knows, we could even be talking 60 and Dixie Dean territory. Scary.”

In league with Messi and Ronaldo

Manchester City were knocked out of the League Cup early but silverware success is not far from them. They are in the Champions League quarter-finals and take on the challenge of Bayern Munich. An eager Sheffield United awaits them in the FA Cup semi-final while they trail Arsenal by six points with a game in hand.

Lionel Messi

Guardiola wants his star forward to fire on all cylinders and has been stoking his ego to get the most out of him. He hailed him on a similar level to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, making his point by citing the considerably better goal-scoring tally of his current pupil.

“We have lived with (Lionel) Messi and Cristiano (Ronaldo) for two incredible decades – and now Haaland is on that level,” he said, following the Southampton win. “You see how many games Erling has played during his professional career and you compare the goals he has scored in that time to Messi and Cristiano, it’s quite similar.”

On the Champions League eve, Haaland’s sights will be set on former rivals Bayern Munich. His last meeting with a Bundesliga rival, RB Leipzig, saw him score five times, matching the Argentine and Luiz Adriano’s goal-scoring feats. Thomas Tuchel will want to avoid such a situation, especially after being knocked out of the DFB Pokal in only his second match in charge.
