Erling Haaland labelled a ‘monster’ as he breaks yet another record in win v Bayern Munich

Erling Haaland has been labelled a “monster” after he broke yet another scoring record in Man City’s win over Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

The sensational striker scored his club’s final goal in the 3-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg victory.

He now sits on 45 goals for the season, the most by a Premier League player in a single campaign.

Haaland breaks another record

The remarkable tally is made even more impressive by the fact it came from his 39th match this season.

It was his sixth goal in eight matches against Bayern Munich, having featured against them regularly for previous club Borussia Dortmund, but the striker had never been on the winning side against the Bavarians.

That all changed on Tuesday, with Haaland breaking the record despite only touching the ball 28 times, fewer than any other starting player for either side.

His efforts continue to stun those watching on, with former Bayern Munich and Germany striker Mario Gomez noting, as quoted by BBC Sport: “Every team has to fear this player because he is just a monster. He is a beast, congratulations to Manchester City for signing him.”

Ex-Bayern and Man City midfielder Owen Hargreaves commented: “He is the most efficient striker I have ever seen. His goalscoring is out of this world,” with former City defender Joleon Lescott saying: “He is unique. It must be great for the wide players knowing you can put in an area and Haaland will connect.”

And ex-Man United striker Dion Dublin noted: “He did so much work for other players in the game. He was never going to be off the scoresheet when City score three goals.”

Breaking down the record

Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy and Liverpool icon Mohamed Salah both hit 44 goals for their clubs in one campaign, with the former managing the feat in 2002/03 and the latter doing it in 2017/18.

Both players needed 52 matches to hit the tally, with Man City star Haaland needing just 39, 13 games fewer.

Breaking down Haaland’s phenomenal tally, the striker has hit 28 goals with his favoured left foot, with 10 with his right and seven using his head.

Just one of the Norwegian’s goals have come outside of the box, with Haaland netting six penalties and an incredible six hat-tricks.

The last player to hit more goals in a season for a club in the English top-flight was Clive Allen, with the Tottenham hero scoring 49 goals in all competitions in 1986/87.

It would definitely be foolish to rule out Haaland surpassing that total, with Man City still in the Champions League and FA Cup, as well as having nine Premier League matches still to play.

Haaland breaks own record

It isn’t just the records of other players that Haaland is breaking, with the young striker surpassing his previous best goalscoring season.

He hit 44 goals in 2019/20, 28 of which came for Red Bull Salzburg and 16 came for Dortmund, with the striker only going to add more for City this season as the games go on.

He also netted his 11th Champions League goal of the season against Bayern Munich, a personal best for the star striker.
