England’s World Cup Squad – Premier League Trio’s Advantage over Man City

Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup 2022 will come as a major relief for Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Liverpool. A number of high-profile players from these clubs have failed to make it to the squad owing to factors like injuries and poor form. However, this should significantly help their respective managers in the second half of the campaign once the World Cup concludes.

From the initial 55-man squad, Southgate announced the list of 26 players who will be travelling to the World Cup party in Qatar.

Manchester City and Chelsea – Key Omissions and Inclusions

Manchester City have the highest representation in England’s final 26-man squad announced by Gareth Southgate with five players making it to the squad. Southgate has gone for Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Kalvin Phillips, John Stones, and Kyle Walker. Pep Guardiola is likely to have a big selection headache if England reach the latter stages of the World Cup.

Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United only have three representatives in the England squad at the World Cup. The blues have seen the inclusion of Raheem Sterling, Conor Gallagher, and Mason Mount. The inclusion of Mount does not come as a huge surprise, but Raheem Sterling’s form has not been great since his £50 million move to Chelsea in the summer. Yet, he has managed to retain a place in the squad.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been left out and this should provide Chelsea with enough versatility in the squad should England make it to the final, as it would delay the return of key players like Raheem Sterling and Mason Mount.

Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United – Key Omissions and Inclusions

Arsenal’s representation in the England squad will be through Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale, and Bukayo Saka.

Liverpool only have two players joining the squad with Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold making it to the list. The latter joins the squad as one of the replacements for Recce James, who is one of the high-profile absentees after picking up a knee injury a month ago.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is likely to be delighted that Joe Gomez is not part of the squad and this should keep them fresh for the remainder of the Premier League campaign. Joe Gomez has had a mixed campaign with inspiring performances featuring alongside some poor displays.

Another one of the big names to miss out on the squad is Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho. The 22-year-old has not been able to hit good form under Erik ten Hag and he has only been able to get three goals so far this season.

The United manager will be quite happy that Sancho did not make it to the squad, as the former Borussia Dortmund winger can certainly benefit from a break at this juncture. However, Southgate has called up Harry Maguire even though he has not featured much of the season. As expected, Marcus Rashford has been brought into the England fold courtesy of his much-improved recent form. Luke Shaw is expected to provide excellent cover to the injured Ben Chilwell.
