Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has told the media that he does not believe it should be his sole responsibility to explain every situation that is occurring at the out of form club.

The experienced Italian coach has said that other figures should also be held responsible for what happens at Spurs besides the first-team manager.

Spurs endured a 2-0 defeat to their arch-rivals Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday and dropped to fifth in the Premier League standings.

Conte on English Football’s ‘Bad Habit’

Conte spoke to the media at the club’s latest press conference ahead of their next game, another tough tie, against Manchester City on Thursday.

“In England I think there’s a bad habit that it’s only the coach talks and explains,” Conte told reporters.

“I’ve never seen the medical department coming here to explain,” he explained, “I’ve never seen the club or the sporting director coming here to explain the strategy or vision of the club.”

“In Italy, before every game there’s a person from the club that goes to speak to the media,” he stated.

“I think for us it could be really better, otherwise there is only one face to explain the situation that I think is better for the club to explain,” he added.

Conte explained that he believes it would be better for everyone if more people from the club stepped forward at press conferences to explain the inner workings of the club.

“I think it could be good for the club to be present in the media,” the Spurs boss said.

“Not every week, but at least every 15 days or once a month,” he explained, “I think it could be more simple for you to understand, otherwise it can seem [as] if something is a criticism or negative and it’s not the case.”

Spurs Out of Form

The side have been very much out of form in recent times, collecting 10 points from their last nine games to fall out of the European places.

The club had looked to have gotten back into form earlier this month after they bounced back from a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa on the 1st of January with a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace days later and followed that up with an FA Cup third round 1-0 win over Portsmouth.

The 2-0 defeat to their bitter North-London rivals will have shaken the side to the core however. The defeat has spurred some pundits, like ex-Arsenal player Paul Merson, to question whether or not the manager’s defensive system is working for the players at Conte’s disposal.

With half the season remaining, the side will be under pressure to climb back into the top four and win Champions League football for next season again.

“If there is criticism then we have to accept [it] but it’s difficult to understand because we are doing everything we can in this situation in our possibility,” Conte told the media gathered before him.

“The mentality of this team is very strong, but it’s not only about the mentality,” he said.
