Colombia vs Jamaica women player ratings: Spencer finally beaten and this ended the Reggae party

Jamaica women conceded their first goal of the World Cup in their first-ever knockout match vs Colombia. In the end, this proved costly as the Reggae Girlz lost 0-1 and left the tournament. This was an amazingly successful competition for Jamaica though and the only thing that they struggled with was scoring goals. Here are our Colombia vs Jamaica women player ratings for what was Jamaica’s last outing, for now, Down Under.

Match Summary

It was Colombia that dominated in the first half. Les Chicas controlled the midfield very well thanks to Ospina’s efforts. Her passes and precise through balls tested Jamaica’s defence. However, the only goalkeeper that kept 3 clean sheets in the group stage Spencer hardly had much to do.

Colombia kept huffing and puffing all first half but they struggled to create clear chances. Jamaica on the other hand were perfectly happy to sit deep, soak up pressure and leave their lone striker Shaw try to beat the entire Colombian defence on her own.

Shaw bulldozed her way through traffic several times  but ultimately every time the third or fourth tackle were stopping her progress.

Determined to finally get the goal they deserved Colombia flew out of the block for the resumption. Usme looked like a player possessed and twice she volleyed just wide before with her 3rd attempt she finally gave Colombia the lead.

Anonymous up until that point Jamaica nearly equalised seconds after play resumed. Shaw’s cross left Brown with an easy header but she only managed to hit the post.

Colombia also hit the woodwork, Santos did that with a header of her own.

Late on Jamaica finally threw everyone forward but they didn’t get the one final chance they hoped for and had to accept defeat.

Player of the Match: Catalina Usme

The scorer of the only goal in this match Catalina Usme deserves our Player of the Match vote. She led the attack for Les Chicas very well and it was her strike that saw the Colombians progress. It was a game of very small margins with Shaw probably causing as many problems at the other end of the pitch.

However, in the end, Usme was the only one to put the ball into the back of the net and that made all the difference.
