Chelsea Football Club are reported to have agreed a fee of 88.5 million pounds to sign Shakhtar Donetsk’s Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk, just as it seemed Premier League rivals Arsenal were set to sign the young star.

Cheslea co-owner Behdad Eghbali and club director of global transfers, Paul Winstanley, are reported to have flown to Antalya in Turkey where Shakhtar are training in order to complete a deal to sign the services of Mudryk on Saturday.

As reported by Sky Sports News, the pair apparently flew Mudryk back to the UK via their private jet so the player could complete a medical before signing for Chelsea.

The Ukrainian is reported to have completed his medical successfully on Sunday and watched Chelsea’s game against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge from the stands.

Mudryk Officially Signed by Chelsea

Chelsea announced the signing of the player officially via social media just before the game kicked off at their home grounds.

Mykhailo Mudryk has finalised his move from Shakhtar Donetsk after agreeing personal terms with the Blues.,” the club tweeted on Sunday.

The club’s deal with the 22-year old player is expected to span seven and a half years. The deal comes after Arsenal were the forerunners to sign the Ukrainian talent but Chelsea made a late swoop to get the winger in the door.

Mudryk had previously referred to Gunners boss Mikel Arteta as a “top coach” as he looked to engineer an exit from Shakhtar Donetsk but Chelsea offered the player and his club a better deal.

According to the latest reports, Chelsea will pay 62 million pounds up front for the transfer while the London club will pay another 26.5 million pounds in add-ons.

Mudryk has managed ten goals and eight assists for Shakhtar this season, showcasing just why he was in such demand.

The player will be expected to make a serious impact for Graham Potter’s side, who have struggled in recent games. The side have won just one game out of their last five fixtures and find themselves 10th in the table after 19 games played.

Chelsea’s Big Investment

After a big investment has gone into the club, Potter’s team will be under pressure to get into the Champions League places, with half of the season remaining.

Chelsea’s new co-owner Todd Boehly has already given the nod to the signings of Benoit Badiashile, David Fofana and Andrey Santos in the January transfer window. Joao Felix has also been signed on loan from La Liga side Atletico Madrid but received a straight red card and three game ban in his debut against Fulham, which his new side went on to lose 2-1.

Those winter signings in the current window come after Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Carney Chukwuemeka, Wesley Fofana, Denis Zakaria and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were signed last summer for a significant amount, either in wages or transfer fee.

Chelsea’s new owners will be hoping to get some return on their investment in the coming months and new boss Graham Potter will be expected to get his side into the Champions League places at the very least.
