Carlo Ancelotti and Diego Simeone know each other as well as just about any two managers in European football and they meet again in this weekend’s Madrid derby.
They’re very different characters on different sides of the Madrid divide. The cool, calm persona of Ancelotti is in total contrast to his opposite number who struggles to sit still for more than a minute and spends most matches screaming and jumping around on the touchline.
At times during his reign, there has been more entertainment to be found from watching Diego Simeone than watching his team play. However make no mistakes, this man has changed the dynamic of what was a very one-sided Madrid rivalry until he showed up as the new boss at the Vicente Calderon in 2011.

There have been 20 meetings between Diego Simeone and Carlo Ancelotti during their respective managerial careers.
- Ancelotti Wins: 8
- Draws: 5
- Simeone Wins: 7
Even before this Sunday’s match, Carlo Ancelotti is already the opposition coach that Diego Simeone has faced the most in his managerial career. This will be the 21st meeting overall and the 19th Madrid derby the two have contested.
In terms of both the overall record and in Madrid showdowns, Ancelotti has one more win than Simeone. However the Atleti boss will still feel as though his record is pretty impressive given he has always had to operate on a lower budget than his opposite number.
The Argentine even went 7 successive games without defeat against Ancelotti during the 2014/15 season when the Madrid rivals met in three two-legged cup ties in addition to their regular league meetings.
However during Ancelotti’s second spell at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Atletico vs Real H2H key battles have evolved and Simeone has found success in the fixture harder to come by, winning just 1 of the 5 meetings since the Italian’s return.
Carlo Ancelotti vs Diego Simeone – 5 iconic meetings
September 2013 – Real Madrid 0-1 Atletico Madrid
It’s ten years ago this month that Carlo Ancelotti and Diego Simeone locked horns for the first time as coaches. Atleti went into the fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu without a Madrid derby win in La Liga since the 1999/00 season when they were actually relegated to the Segunda Division.
However 14 years of pain was washed away with Diego Costa’s early goal setting Atleti up for a famous win that proved the launchpad for a successful title challenge.

May 2014 – Real Madrid 4-1 Atletico Madrid (AET)
As has so often been the case in this rivalry, Real Madrid still managed to have the last laugh in the 2013/14 season. Atleti were just seconds away from winning their first European Cup in Lisbon, only for Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale to inspire Los Blancos to a stunning comeback win.
Incredibly, Ancelotti’s Real and Simeone’s Atleti would meet no fewer than 13 times during the Italian’s initial two year spell as boss at the Santiago Bernabeu during a real golden age for football in the Spanish capital.
February 2015 – Atletico Madrid 4-0 Real Madrid
Simeone got some revenge the following season as Atletico Madrid claimed their first home Madrid derby win in La Liga in the 21st Century.
They did so in stunning fashion with goals from Tiago, Saul Niguez, Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic demolishing Los Blancos at the Vicente Calderon. The result ended Atleti’s 64 year wait for a league double over their neighbours.
September 2016 – Atletico Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich
Carlo Ancelotti left Real Madrid in the summer of 2015, but it wasn’t long before the Carlo Ancelotti vs Diego Simeone H2H rivalry got a couple of new chapters.
Atleti were paired with Bayern in the group stage of the 2016/17 Champions League. Both matches ended in 1-0 home wins with Yannick Carrasco on target for Atleti in their final season at the Vicente Calderon.
January 2023 – Real Madrid 3-1 Atletico Madrid (AET)
Fast forward to early 2023 and Carlo Ancelotti levelled up the H2H wins tally against Simeone at seven apiece with a Copa del Rey Quarter Final win.
With Atleti having already exited the Champions League and fallen way out of a contention in La Liga, it was a big game for Los Rojiblancos and they took the lead through Alvaro Morata. Real Madrid dug deep though and fought back to win in Extra Time, condemning their rivals to another trophyless season.
