Brighton Starlet Set to Reject Advances of Man United

Brighton & Hove Albion attacker Evan Ferguson will not join Manchester United in the summer according to the latest reports.

Under Roberto De Zerbi, the 18-year-old has created a name for himself at the Amex Stadium with seven goals and three assists in 16 games across all competitions.

In December and January, Ferguson scored three goals and dished out two assists over the course of four Premier League games. He also scored three times to put his side on route to the FA Cup semi finals.

The teenager’s achievements earned him his first two Republic of Ireland caps in November of last year, and he scored his first goal for his country in Wednesday’s 3-2 friendly victory against Latvia at the Aviva Stadium.

As a result of signing a professional contract on his 18th birthday, Ferguson is tied to the Seagulls until 2026, although he is already being linked to a Champions League contender.

Manchester United are rumored to be planning an approach for Ferguson in the summer, while Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are also rumored to have a serious interest in the young Irish forward.

The Sun says that Ferguson will reject interest from the ‘Big Six’ clubs of the Premier League to continue his development at Brighton.

Man United are reportedly intending to send scouts to the Aviva Stadium on Monday evening with  Ferguson likely to start for Ireland’s Euro 2024 qualifying match against France night.

While Manchester United may offer Ferguson a higher pay and a possible route into the Champions League, according to reports he believes that sticking at the Amex is the best decision for him at this point in his career.

Ferguson played for Bohemians at the junior level prior to attracting the attention of Brighton scouts, who moved him to the South Coast in January 2021.

Since then, he has progressed through the youth ranks to play a significant role under De Zerbi.

The Ireland international has seven goals and four assists in 20 games for Brighton, who are currently seventh in the Premier League, tied on points with Liverpool despite having played one more game.

The 18-year-old also scored twice in his team’s 5-0 FA Cup quarterfinal rout of Grimsby Town, setting up a Wembley duel with Manchester United for a position in the championship event.

In his pre-match press conference prior to Ireland’s match against France, Ferguson’s counterpart Kylian Mbappe offered the youngster his stamp of approval, stating, “We saw some clips of him.”

“Of course, he is an important striker for the Ireland team but we hope he’s going to do nothing tomorrow and that means we’ll win,” Mbappe added, “We are going to do our job.”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure has left Manchester United with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Wout Weghorst as the side’s primary offensive options, although it remains to be seen if the latter’s loan transfer from Burnley will be made permanent.

Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen, and Randal Kolo Muani have all been suggested as potential targets for Manchester United this summer, along with Ferguson.
