Tottenham and Brentford played out a four-goal thriller on Sunday afternoon at the Gtech Community Stadium which has seen both sides take a point from their opening match of the season. Beforehand, there were question marks around where the goals would come from with Ivan Toney suspended and Harry Kane now a Bayern Munich player. However, fans were treated to plenty of exciting and attacking football with a draw the fair result in the end.
Brentford player ratings
Contents
Mark Flekken 7/10 – Couldn’t do anything for either goal and looks like a decent replacement for David Raya.
Aaron HickeyΒ 7/10 – Kept Son out of the game for the most part.
Nathan Collins 6/10 – Not the defender’s best game after signing from Wolves. He will improve.
Ethan Pinnock 5/10 – Played at the heart of the back three but seemed to struggle against Richarlison at times.
Kristoffer Ajer 6/10 – Weaker on the ball than Pinnock and Collins but was more commanding aerially at least.
Rico Henry 7/10 – Arguably Brentford’s best player on the day. He bombed forward at every opportunity and caused issues for the Spurs’ defence. Forced Kulusevski to play deeper as a result.
Mathias Jensen 7/10 – When he was on the pitch the midfield battle was at least a contest. When he was forced off with an injury, Brentford barely touched the ball.
Christian Norgaard 6/10 – Struggled to get in the game but looked bright when he did.
Vitaly Janelt 6/10 – Worked hard but couldn’t lay a glove on Spurs.
Yoane Wissa 7/10 – A bright display from the forward and got himself a goal to put the Bees 2-1 up.

Brian Mbuemo 8/10 – A fantastic centre forwards display that suggests Brentford won’t miss Ivan Toney too much.
Substitutes
Mikkel Damsgaard 5/10 – Failed to replicate Jensen’s performance.
Kevin Schade 6/10 – Had a half chance late on but couldn’t get the ball under control.

Tottenham player ratings
Guglielmo Vicario 5/10 – Looked ropey at time and could have perhaps done better for the Wissa goal.
Emerson Royal 7/10 – Took his goal beautifully but is still found out of position far too often.
Cristian Romero N/A
Micky Van de Ven 6/10 – Pacey in his recovery runs which will be vital for Spurs given their new high defensive line.
Destiny Udogie 6/10 – A solid outing at left-back.
Yves Bissouma 8/10 – Finally, the Brighton Bissouma seems to be back in the room. He glided from box to box and will be a huge player for Spurs if he can play like this.
Oliver Skipp 5/10 – Didn’t offer much at all and was perhaps guilty of hiding from the ball.
James Maddison 8/10 – An excellent debut from Maddison and he topped it off with a pair of assists.

Dejan Kulusevski 7/10 – Looked bright in the first half and his trickery caused problems. Final ball was perhaps lacking but he at least looked a threat.
Son Heung-Min 5/10 – Another disappointing performance from the new captain. He needs his confidence back sharpish.
Richarlison 6/10 – Will feel as if he should have scored but his general play was good. Held it up well and looked to get involved.
Substitutes
Davinson Sanchez 5/10 – Remains to be seen whether he has a future at the club but he was his usual erratic self on Sunday.
Ivan Perisic N/A
Pape Sarr N/A
Player of the match: James Maddison
Spurs’ biggest summer signing showed his new supporters exactly what they can expect from him on his debut with everything good his team did going through him. His ball for Romero’s opener was stunning and his passing around the box was immaculate all afternoon. He ended the game with two assists but that total could have been even higher if Richarlison had taken his chances.
