Brentford are interested in acquiring Liverpool and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher in a transfer this summer.
Spanish ‘keeper David Raya is presently the undisputed starter for Brentford, having appeared in all 35 Premier League games for the side this season. However, Raya’s future with Brentford is uncertain, as his contract is scheduled to expire in the summer of 2024.
The Spaniard has already turned down two new contract proposals from the Bees amid rumors that Manchester United will make a bid to bring in the ‘keeper as competition for David De Gea this summer.
Given that De Gea has yet to agree any contract extension with the Red Devils, Raya could well be brought in as a number one choice in goal at Old Trafford.
The Spaniard’s ball playing skills are at a higher level than his compatriot’s and may well be to the liking of Man United manager Erik ten Hag.
With his contract running down, the Bees could well choose to sell Raya this summer to the highest bidder and ensure that they get some funds in for the ‘keeper.
According to reports, the London club will consider offers in the vicinity of £35 million for the Spain international, with a portion of the fee likely going toward the acquisition of his replacement.
Liverpool ‘Keeper Could Be Brought In To Replace Raya
The Sun has recently reported that the club have identified Liverpool backup ‘keeper Kelleher as a possible replacement for Raya if he leaves in the upcoming transfer window.
Liverpool hold Kelleher in high regard, but they may likely sanction a sale as a reward for his perseverance as Alisson Becker’s backup. The club will also be looking to bring in funds as they seek to revamp their squad under Jurgen Klopp for the 2023/24 season.
According to the report, Brentford would have to pay between £10 million and £12 million to acquire Kelleher from the Reds before next season kicks off.
Should the Bees elect to pursue the Republic of Ireland international, Brighton & Hove Albion could pose competition for his signature.
Prior to signing a new goalkeeper however, the Seagulls would have to offload Robert Sanchez, who has relinquished his starting position to Jason Steele.
Kelleher Could Seek First-Team Action To Nail Down Ireland Jersey
This season, Kelleher has appeared in only three cup games, and he has been limited to 20 appearances for Liverpool, in which he has kept 10 clean sheets.
The 24-year-most old’s memorable moment in a Liverpool shirt occurred in the 2021-22 EFL Cup final when he converted the game-winning penalty strike in a shootout against Chelsea.
Despite winning several trophies during his tenure at Liverpool, the Irish ‘keeper may go in search of first-team opportunities at the likes of Brentford to stake a claim for the Republic of Ireland no.1 jersey.
Despite his talent, the youngster has not been able to nail down a starting spot with Stephen Kenny’s side as he has not secured enough first team minutes. Instead, the honor has gone to Southampton’s Gavin Bazunu, who has up to recently been the Saints’ starting ‘keeper.
