Jamaica women reached the knockouts of the World Cup at the expense of the mighty Brazil team after holding off the Canarinhas to a 0-0 draw. This 3rd consecutive clean sheet for the Reggae Girlz cemented their status as the best defensive team from the group stage and it seems their fairytale is only just starting.   • Aggressive start from Brazil but a series of fine saves from Spencer prevented early damage.
  • Allyson Swaby and her sister defended stoically all match. Between them, they blocked 8 shot attempts.
  • Brazil got desperate late on. Jamaica never blinked. The Reggae Girlz held on and partied after the final whistle.

GK Rebecca Spencer 9/10 – Made 8 saved. Kept her 3rd clean sheet in 3 matches. Excellent all around.

DF Deneisha Blackwood 6/10 – Made some bad errors late on when the pressure became relentless. Got lucky to receive timely help from teammates.

DF Chantelle Swaby 7/10 – Another very solid showing from the first of the Swaby sisters.

DF Allyson Swaby 8/10 – Another rock-solid display from arguably the best defender of the entire tournament so far.

DF Tiernny Wiltshire 7/10 – Looked very good protecting her zone. Didn’t do much else, but she didn’t need to.

MF Drew Spence 7/10 – She was the boss of the midfield. Her physicality stopped countless Brazilian attacks early.

MF Vyan Sampson 7/10 Passed the ball with great accuracy all match. Helped a lot defensively too.

MF Jody Brown 6/10 – Started slow. Did much better past the hour when the Brazilians tired.

MF Cheyna Matthews 5/10 – Pretty poor and got subbed early. Her inability to find open teammates was frustrating.

FW Khadija Shaw 7/10 – Despite not having much help she kept the Brazilian defenders engaged all match. Her hold-up play was excellent too.

FW Atlanta Primus 6/10 – She was lively but ineffective.

Substitutes 

DF Tiffany Cameron 7/10 – Came on to protect the goalless draw. Played her part and made some vital late tackles.

The other 1 substitution was made inside the final 15 minutes so those players didn’t spend enough time on the pitch to receive ratings.

Brazil Player Ratings: a shameful end to a poor World Cup

GK Leticia 6/10 – Had very little to do. Never needed to make a save.

DF Antonia 7/10 – Defended her zone very well. Could have done more to help in attack.

DF Kathellen 7/10 – She did very well neutralising Shaw all match.

DF Rafaelle 7/10 – Also, rock-solid defensively.

DF Tamires 7/10 – Had some good forays forward early on. Her intensity dropped late on.

MF Luana 5/10 – Failed to impact the match. Her passes were very conservative.

MF Adriana 7/10 – Aggressive and only 3 great saves prevented her from scoring.

MF Ary Borges 5/10 – Never got going.

MF Kerolin 6/10 – Dominated on the flank. Her crosses were not accurate enough though.

MF Debinha 6/10 – Tried hard. Showed wastefulness – only 1 of her 5 shot attempts was on target.

FW Marta 7/10 – Despite her age was the liveliest Brazilian on the pitch. The only thing she failed to do was beat Spencer with her 3 good chances.

Substitutes 

MF Zaneratto 6/10 – Came on early and for about 10 minutes provided a spark. Faded fast after that.

The other 3 substitutions were made inside the final 15 minutes so those players didn’t spend enough time on the pitch to receive ratings.

Jamaica’s goalie is yet to concede a goal this World Cup. By far her most impressive clean sheet was in this match vs Brazil as she had to produce 8 saves and also made 11 vital interceptions of dangerous crosses. Spencer has been sensational and right now is the front-runner for the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament award. Will anyone beat her?
