The Matildas knew that only a win vs Canada will see them through to the knockouts of their own World Cup. Pumped up by an electric atmosphere inside the stadium the Australian women delivered and more with Raso leading by example early on. In the end, the Matildas won 4-0 and can look ahead full of confidence. At the same time, the result meant that the Olympic champions Canada crashed out of the tournament. Here is our vote for Player of the Match and also our own Australia women vs Canada player ratings.

- Raso’s very early goal to put Australia in front released an avalanche.
- Inspired by their fanatic supporters the Matildas decided everything before the hour with 2 more goals.
- With Canada down and out the Matildas finished them off with a late 4th goal.
Australia women Player Ratings: early Raso-show sent the Matildas through
Contents
GK Mackenzie Arnold 7/10 – Very solid when asked to gather crosses. Apart from that she wasn’t tested much.
DF Clare Hunt 8/10 – Outmusced Canada’s leader Sinclair and this proved crucial for Australia to control things.
DF Steph Catley 8/10 – Played her best game of the tournament. Dominated at both ends of the pitch. Her aggressive runs opened the spaces Raso needed for both her goals.
DF Alanna Kennedy 7/10 – Did her defensive job very well. Also, distribute the ball well from the back.
DF Ellie Carpenter 7/10 – She also played very well defensively. Wasn’t involved much at the other end though.
MF Hayley Raso 9/10 – The scorer of the 2 first-half goals that paved the way. Raso was unplayable for the 75 minutes she was on the pitch. Unlucky, not to register a hat-trick with the post denying her.
MF Caitlin Foord 8/10 – Used in a deeper midfield role in this match. She excelled in it. Provided the assist for the 3rd goal. Her crosses and through balls created 4 other big chances.
MF Katrina Gorry 8/10 – Dominant in every aspect. Her passes were crisp. Her marking was excellent. Her defensive tackles were timely.
MF Kyra Cooney-Cross 7/10 – Started well and was involved in the first goal. Faded after that though.
FW Mary Fowler 7/10 – Scored the calming 3rd goal early in the second half. Moved very well off the ball too.
FW Emily van Egmond 7/10 – Her size kept the Canadian defenders engaged. This opened spaces for her teammates.
Substitutes
All 3 Australian substitutions were made very late on so there was no time to rate those players.
Canada women Player Ratings: the Canuks froze early and never recovered
GK Kailen Sheridan 5/10 – Beaten 4 times with just 6 shots on target. Should have done better for at least 2 of the goals she conceded.
DF Kadeisha Buchanan 7/10 – Played relatively well. Didn’t allow any major dangers from her zone.
DF Jayde Riviere 6/10 – Shaky all match. Her passing from the back was good but her inability to track runners proved costly.
DF Ashley Lawrence 5/10 – Awful showing. Made mistakes for both the 2nd and the 3rd goals.
DF Vanessa Gilles 6/10 – Protected her zone relatively well. Didn’t get involved in attack though.
MF Quinn 6/10 – Her passing was decent. Her defensive marking was awful.
MF Julia Grosso 5/10 – Showed inability to do her main job, mark runners and intercept low passes.
MF Jessie Fleming 5/10 – Clearly, not 100% fit she looked tired and sluggish all game.
FW Adriana Leon 5/10 – She was way too eager. Selfish too. Kept running into traffic and never created anything dangerous.
FW Jordyn Huitema 6/10 – Got involved in some decent moves. Her crosses created the 2 best Canadian chances. She didn’t have a good look though.
FW Christine Sinclair 6/10 – It was a sad end for the veteran. She tried but at age 36 didn’t have the legs to hurt the Matildas.
Substitutes
DF Deanne Rose 5/10 – Came on at halftime to stop the bleeding but failed with 2 more goals conceded after the break.
DF Allysha Chapman 5/10 – Same here. Introduced at halftime to prevent further damage but failed.
FW Evelyne Viens 6/10 – Made some good runs shortly after coming on. Lost willingness late on.
MF Sophie Schmidt 6/10 – Improved the passing accuracy. Also, she blocked 2 shots late on to prevent greater humiliation.
FW Cloe Lacasse 6/10 – Had 2 shots saved after coming on.
Player of the Match: Hayley Raso
It was Raso’s first-half brace that paved the way for the Matildas to earn this impressive win and with it a place in the knockouts. Raso’s aggression and great finishing in the first half practically decided the match and she utterly deserves our vote for Player of the Match.
