Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard eyes Rangers duo

New Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has been dominating the headlines ever since making the switch from Rangers.

The ex-Liverpool midfielder has been welcomed with open arms, but many Gers fans feel he left Scotland at the wrong time. Gerrard helped turn the club’s fortunes around quickly. But supporters believe he could have stayed until at least the end of the current campaign.

Gerrard has thanked Rangers for having him, but now his sights are set firmly on a recovery at Aston Villa. He will undoubtedly look to implement his own way of doing things in the coming months. And that includes bringing in some of his own players.

Just like new Spurs boss Antonio Conte potentially turning to his old club for new signings in north London, Gerrard could turn to his former side. Here are two Rangers players the new Aston Villa manager could sign:

Connor Goldson

Villa’s 20 goals conceded is the third-worst in the league this season. Only Newcastle (24) and Norwich (26) have conceded more. A once steady defence has now been completely turned upside down.

Gerrard will definitely look to rectify this early on. He prides himself on a strong backline, and proved that time and again in Glasgow. Rangers conceded just 13 goals last season on their way to the league title.

With that in mind, the new boss might turn to one of his favourite players at Rangers. Goldson may not be the star signing that Villa fans want, but Ibrox News reports that it could be a possibility. It would be a very cheap option, with the defender’s contract expiring this summer.

Moreover, with Marca claiming that Newcastle boss Eddie Howe wants a reunion with Tyrone Mings, Villa may need to move quickly in order to sharpen things up at the back. Mings was dropped by Dean Smith for last month’s meeting with West Ham.

Glen Kamara

Undoubtedly the strongest candidate. That is firstly because Villa are in need of a player just like him. But it is also because Kamara has come on leaps and bounds in recent seasons. He is now not only a star for Rangers, but also for the Finland national team, as witnessed in Euro 2020. Birmingham Live reports there is a possible move on the cards.

The Midlands club certainly have a strong attack. But they recently lost loan player Ross Barkley, and now rely on youngster Jacob Ramsey in midfield. Ramsey has certainly performed admirably, while John McGinn has been as outstanding as ever. Marvelous Nakamba is another regular name on the team sheet.

But Kamara could be a superb addition to the lineup. And he would, of course, work expertly with his manager. Available in either centre midfield or defensive midfield, his versatility is an added bonus.

Kent and Morelos also linked with Aston Villa

Two more Rangers stars have also been linked with a move south, as reported by GiveMeSport. One of them is former Liverpool winger Ryan Kent. The other is Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos.

The issue with the pair, however, is that Villa have recently spent millions on attacking players. The loss of Jack Grealish was a huge blow. And Smith tried to replace him with Emiliano Buendia, Danny Ings and Leon Bailey. It hasn’t quite gone to plan.

Kent would occupy similar roles to that of Buendia and Bailey. And Morelos would do the same for Ings. Competition for places would certainly increase, but it is perhaps unwise to throw more money towards the club’s front line.
