Manchester United held talks with the agent of Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana yesterday to discuss a potential summer switch to Old Trafford, according to numerous reports, and signing a new starting goalkeeper seems to have become a priority for the club.

United’s current incumbent, David de Gea, was expected to pen a fresh deal on reduced terms with the Red Devils, however, with just days left to run on his current contract, a renewal for the Spaniard has yet to be agreed.

De Gea could even be allowed to leave on a free transfer on July 1st with cash-rich Saudi Arabian outfits believed to be circling for his signature, while other rumours indicate that United boss Erik ten Hag is targeting an upgrade on the Spanish stopper and is happy to let him go.

Onana set for United summer switch?

Inter Milan’s number one, Andre Onana, has inched his way to the top of United’s list of preferred goalkeeping targets and the Nerazzurri are thought to be demanding in excess of €50m for his services.

Erik ten Hag worked with Onana during his successful spell with Ajax, indeed the Cameroon regular spent five seasons in Amsterdam, four of which were under ten Hag’s instruction.

The 27-year-old is considered one of football’s best keepers in terms of distribution and command of his penalty area – departments where David de Gea has often been found wanting.

However, Onana isn’t the only goalkeeper being monitored by United and below, we’ve taken a look at five other candidates for the position that the Red Devils could sign this summer.

Five alternative goalkeeper options for Manchester United

Diogo Costa – FC Porto

23-year-old FC Porto and Portugal keeper Diogo Costa has been scouted extensively by United, though his €75m release clause is believed to be too high for the Red Devils to activate. Porto need an influx of cash to balance the books however, and if United can agree a more reasonable fee for the acrobatic netminder, then a deal could be reached.

Jordan Pickford – Everton

Jordan Pickford has plenty of admirers at United, according to reports, and though the England international has been public about his attachment to current club Everton, a concrete attempt from Man Utd to sign him could loosen those affections pretty quickly.

David Raya – Brentford

David Raya had looked nailed on to join Tottenham Hotspur, however talks between Spurs and Brentford seem to have stalled and that could open the door for United to swoop in at the eleventh hour. A solid shot stopper and confident passer, 27-year-old Raya would tick many of Erik ten Hag’s boxes.

Mike Maignan – AC Milan

Mike Maignan’s reputation has exploded over the past two seasons with the French goalie’s well-rounded skillset and penchant for spectacular stops earning him praise from all quarters. The 27-year-old doesn’t seem to have any weaknesses in his game and he could be the perfect long-term successor to Les Blues icon Hugo Lloris between the sticks.

Dean Henderson – Manchester United

If budgets are tight this summer and United are looking for a cut-price option to replace de Gea, then academy graduate Dean Henderson could be a candidate to fill the void. The 26-year-old isn’t exactly on good terms with United following a series outspoken interviews during last season’s loan spell with Nottingham Forest and though Henderson has been tipped to leave Old Trafford permanently before August, a de Gea exit could trigger a rethink.
