4 Southampton players who could leave if Saints are relegated from Premier League

Southampton have endured a miserable Premier League campaign, with the club currently rock bottom of the table, where they have been for what seems like an eternity.

It’s been a campaign of very few highs for the south coast side, who have been consigned to the Championship for some time now.

And they are looking increasingly likely of being the first club to be relegated this season, with the current Premier League campaign rapidly drawing to a close.

As is always the case, there will be a handful of relegated players who are simply too good for Championship football and will therefore seek a quick transfer if their club does go down.

And that will most certainly be the case for some Southampton players this summer if the club find themselves in such a scenario.

4 Southampton players who could leave

Romeo Lavia

Joining from Manchester City last summer, defensive midfielder Romeo Lavia has been one of the very few shining lights at Southampton this season, with Manchester United and Arsenal now reportedly interested in his services.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Man City have shown their cunning in the transfer window once again by inserting a £40m buy-back clause into the 19-year-old’s deal, with that clause to take effect from 2024.

Armel Bella-Kotchap

Another hugely talented youngster on the books at Southampton, Armel Bella-Kotchap has put in many impressive displays at the back among an otherwise shaky defence. At just 21 years old, he already boasts two caps for the German national team.

The youngster has unfortunately missed some key periods of the campaign with knee and shoulder issues, but his time on the pitch has already convinced some much bigger clubs to make a move for this summer.

Gavin Bazunu

Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu is another to have only joined the Saints last summer, in what was another switch from Manchester to the south coast. With Ederson firmly holding the number one role at the Etihad, Man City aren’t in need of a goalkeeper anytime soon and seemingly have no plans to bring him back, but other clubs could show interest in Bazunu.

He hasn’t exactly had many opportunities to keep a clean sheet given the poor defensive displays in front of him, but the youngster is a fine shot-stopper, and at just 21 is only going to get better. The Saints number one already boasts 14 appearances for the Republic of Ireland.

Southampton

James Ward-Prowse

Undoubtedly sitting at the very top of the list of potential exits from Southampton this summer is James Ward-Prowse. He has been one of the top midfielders in the league for several seasons, and definitely deserves more time in the top flight.

The skipper has been his usual classy self in the middle of the park, keeping things ticking as well as breaking up play, along with his phenomenal free-kicks and set-pieces.

Liverpool are in the market for a midfielder to help revitalise their entire team, and Ward-Prowse certainly fits the bill. He would also be a much cheaper option than some of the midfielders the Reds have been linked with if indeed the Saints are relegated to the Championship.
