Six Nations Scores: Round Four
The first four rounds of the Six Nations have confirmed the expectations of rugby fans around the world that this would be a fantastic edition of the annual tournament. Here’s an overview of the Six Nations scores in Round Four:
- Wales defeated Italy 29-17
- France defeated England 53-10
- Ireland defeated Scotland 22-7
While France pummeling England was certainly the biggest result of the round, here’s a closer look at how each of these Six Nations results played out on the weekend.
Round Four Six Nations Scores: Italy vs Wales
The opening game of the Six Nations Round Four saw cellar dwellers Italy and Wales face off in a match that was likely to determine the wooden spoon in 2023.
Both teams came into the match winless from the first three rounds, and desperate for a win. Surprisingly, their motivations were still quite different. Wales were looking to avoid the wooden spoon as a matter of pride, having sat at the top of the rugby world just a few short years ago. Italy, on the other hand, have been playing great rugby this Six Nations, and wouldn’t have wanted to end their campaign empty handed.
Ultimately, this match came down to a few bounces of the ball. Nothing went Italy’s way, and they were pipped by Wales 29-17.
Round Four Six Nations Scores: England vs France
What a state English rugby is in now. After their painful opening loss to Scotland in front of a home crowd at Twickenham a month ago, England seemed to be rebuilding nicely this year. Wins over Wales and Italy perhaps even gave a false hope of a team that could push for the title. These hopes all came crashing down last weekend, when France put them to the sword 53-10.
France were simple too good. Again, they scored early, leading 10-0 within seven minutes. Something of an arm wrestle ensued for the next 20 minutes, but England couldn’t hang on for long, conceding further tries in the 26th and 41st minutes of the first half.
While England hit back first in the second half, and seemed to be making a match of it at 27-10 with 25 minutes to go, France were just toying with them. Four tries in 20 minutes left England in tatters, staring down the barrel of a tough review on Monday.
Round Four Six Nations Scores: Scotland vs Ireland
Rounding out the Six Nations results from Round Four, Scotland hosted Ireland hoping for an upset win over the World No.1 side.
For about an hour, it was looking like Scotland may be able to pull off the upset. After an early Sexton penalty, Scotland were the first to score, with Jones going in after 17 minutes and Russell converting. Ireland hit back to make it 8-7 at halftime, a score which remained for the opening stanza of the second half too.
It wasn’t until some James Lowe brilliance that Ireland cracked Scotland. Two tries in five minutes blew the score out to 22-7, where it stayed until the end of the match.
Six Nations Results
After Round Four, here’s what the latest Six Nations results have done to the overall standings in this competition:
Six Nations Standings
Won | Lost | Points Differential | Points | |
Ireland | 4 | 0 | +66 | 19 |
France | 3 | 1 | +46 | 15 |
Scotland | 2 | 2 | +8 | 10 |
England | 2 | 2 | -22 | 10 |
Wales | 1 | 3 | -50 | 5 |
Italy | 0 | 4 | -48 | 1 |
Four rounds into the Six Nations 2023, and Ireland stand atop the Six Nations standings in clear first place. With 19 points, they have an almost unassailable lead over France who sit on 15 points. Scotland, England, Wales and Italy all have dropped out of contention in this year’s Six Nations after their Round Four results.
Who is the Favourite After the Six Nations Results in Round Four?
Two rounds remain in the Six Nations 2023, but already matters have shifted regarding each team’s chances of winning.
These odds from Ladbrokes were correct at the time of writing.
For Ireland, they were pre-tournament favourites, slightly ahead of France. Now, they are the heavy favourites to win having won their first four matches, and are paying 1/10 (1.03) to win the Six Nations in 2023. France is the only team capable of stopping them, but it would require a spectacular collusion of results for that to occur.
Chances are, Dublin will be getting drunk dry this Saturday night.
