This year sees one of the most exciting Six Nations competitions unfold.
For the first time in history, the No.1 and No.2 teams in the world are competing in the Six Nations, with Ireland and France both vying for the title. With Ireland the bookies’ favourite to win the Six Nations pre-tournament, while France are leading the odds to win the 2023 Rugby World Cup later this year, there’s plenty on the line. Add in the fact that England and Wales are both under new coaches, while Scotland and Italy appear to be playing with new confidence, and this is looking like it will be one of the best Six Nations in decades.

After four rounds, Ireland have proven worthy of their pre-tournament favourite tags, remaining unbeaten from their first four games. Scotland, England, Wales and Italy are all out of the running with one round to go, and it’s only France who could potential prize Ireland’s fingers off the Six Nations trophy this year. However, it would take a gargantuan last gasp effort by Les Blues, with Ireland the heavy favourites to win this year’s title.
We breakdown all the best Six Nations predictions throughout this tournament, looking at the latest Six Nations odds and previewing the best bookies for Six Nations winner odds as well.
Six Nations Predictions: Round Five
Last weekend saw the hopes of Scotland and England in the 2023 Six Nations extinguished in very different fashions. Scotland have continued to perform valiantly, while England were thoroughly trounced by France. With one final set of games this weekend, how will the cookie crumble on the points table? Ahead of Round Five this weekend, here are our top Six Nations tips:
Scotland vs Italy Six Nations Predictions
The first match of Round Five will be played entirely for pride, with Scotland taking on Italy. Scotland are currently third in the standings, and will be eager to finish what has been a strong campaign for them on a high. Italy will equally be looking to finish with a bang, having been impressive this year despite not claiming a win yet.
We say Scotland will empty the tank against Italy and score a big win here. They will be bitterly disappointed to have lost their two big matches against Ireland and France, after putting themselves in a good position through an away win against England. While Italy are no longer the side of old that was an easy beat, there’s a good chance they will have run out of gas, particularly after last weekend’s disappointing loss to Wales. Expect Scotland by 20+ points in this one.
France vs Wales Six Nations Predictions
The second game on Saturday evening in Round Five of the Six Nations could be a real live wire. France are a long shot at winning the tournament, but they still have a chance. To do so, they’ll need a big win against Wales. Wales, on the other hand, have little to play for—they’ve likely avoided the wooden spoon, and are well out of contention for the title.
It’s hard to see France simply grinding out a win here—that would virtually seal their fate as runners up in the Six Nations 2023. Instead, they’ll be willing to risk a loss by throwing the ball around, chasing a bonus point win with a margin of at least 20 points. Given the performance they put in against England last weekend, we say they’ll get it, forcing this year’s Six Nations to go down to the final match of the tournament.
Ireland vs England Six Nations Predictions
The big question is, can England spoil Ireland’s party? There would be few celebrations bigger than Ireland achieving a Grand Slam in Dublin, something they haven’t done before in the Six Nations. That’s exactly what they’ll be playing for on Saturday night. With England out of the race, they’ll be looking to play for pride after being embarrassed at home last weekend.
Ireland will know the exact equation required before they step on the field. They may only need to lose within a certain margin to win, or a victory could be required. Regardless, they’ll be chasing the Grand Slam. Against a woeful England, we say that Dublin will be drinking itself dry long into the night on Saturday.
Six Nations Predictions: Outright Winner Odds
Heading into the final round of the Six Nations 2023, it comes down to two teams: Ireland and France. Here’s what the odds to win the Six Nations betting odds look like ahead of Round Five next weekend:
- Ireland to win @ 1/10 (1.03)
- France to win @ 14/1 (15.00)
The reason for these outright winner odds, are because the following scenarios are at play this weekend:
- France lose to Wales, and Ireland win the Six Nations regardless of their result against England
- France beat Wales without a bonus point, and Ireland need to either beat England, or lose by less than seven
- France beat Wales with a bonus point by 20 or more points, and Ireland will need to beat England
- France beat Wales with a bonus point by less than 20 points, and Ireland need to either beat England, or lose by 1-7 points (depending on France’s exact points differential)
In essence, France needs to thump Wales, and then rely on England to upset Ireland in Dublin. If one of these two fails to happen, then Ireland are the Six Nations 2023 champions. The first of these is quite likely, given how well France are playing and how poor Wales are; however, the second is a stretch. England will be wounded after last week, but it’s hard to see them beating Ireland in Dublin.
Chances are, in a few day’s time Ireland will be lifting the trophy.
