US Darts Masters 2023 Tournament Preview and Details

With the close of the 2023 Premier League Darts and a break in the current European Tour, the next big darts action is the US Darts Masters. This is the third tournament on the 2023 World Series of Darts and comes from The Theater at Madison Square Gardens in New York on June 2nd – 3rd.

2023 US Darts Masters

The tournament is a fairly new one on the circuit, and it is one of the rare excursions that the PDC makes outside of Europe. This is part of the 2023 World Series of Darts which takes the PDC show to different continents.

2023 will be the fifth edition of the US Darts Masters and the reigning champion is Michael Smith who defeated Michael van Gerwen in last year’s final. ‘Bully Boy’ Smith is in New York for a title defence.

US Darts Masters 2023 Tournament Details

The US Darts Masters has a field of sixteen players. Reigning champion Michael Smith goes as one of the eight elite PDC players in the field. Those eight are kept apart in the first round of action, seeded based on results from the other World Series of Darts events this season.

Elite PDC Players at the US Darts Masters 2023

  1. Michael Smith
  2. Gerwyn Price
  3. Peter Wright
  4. Rob Cross
  5. Luke Humphries
  6. Dimitri Van den Bergh
  7. Michael van Gerwen

Seeding of the top four sees Smith and Rob Cross start in the top half of the draw, and Gerwyn Price and Peter Wright in the bottom half. The pairs would be kept apart until the semi-finals.

The rest of the draw is then made up of North American players. Three of those, Jeff Smith, Matt Campbell and Jules van Dongen are PDC Tour cardholders.

The final five spots are made up of the CDC Continental Cup Winner, the CDC Cross-Border Challenge winner and CDC Qualifiers held in May.

The first round matches are best of 11 legs, while the rest of the rounds are best of 15 legs.

Main Contenders

Naturally, because of the setup of the World Series of Darts events, it’s more likely than not that you are going to see one of the PDC superstars get through and land the title. Michael Smith, who won last year’s title and reached Finals night of the Premier League season recently, has been in good form.

Smith took the Bahrain Masters earlier this year and he opens his title defence in New York against Canada’s Jim Long. There could be a big quarter-final fixture for Smith in the draw against Michael van Gerwen, in what would be a repeat of last year’s final. MVG also beat Smith recently in the Premier League semifinals before lifting the title.

In the bottom half of the draw Gerwyn Price, who lost this season’s Nordic Masters final, is expected to be in the hunt. He kicks off against the No.1 US-ranked player Jules van Dongen. The draw could be favourable for Price who is heading up the bottom half of the table.

Peter Wright, winner of this season’s Nordic Masters and a recent title-winner on the PDC European Tour is an interesting name in the bottom half of the draw. Nathan Aspinall and Luke Humphries are also dangerous dark horses in the bottom half of the 2023 US Darts Masters draw.
