Roberto Bautista Agut vs Tommy Paul – Match Prediction
Contents
Both players have had to dig in times in their route to the fourth round, but they will both arguably be better off for it.
Tommy Paul to Win
Although on the face of it, this game is a toss of a coin, we are backing Tommy Paul to come out on top as he has been more impressive in the tournament so far. He has played a set less than Bautista Agut and has managed to dominate his opponents in a way that his opponent has failed to do consistently so far. The American will look to keep the points as short as possible with his booming forehand and if he can hit that with any kind of regularity then he will win.
Total Sets – 5
If Bautista Agut is on form then there is no reason why this game can’t go all the way to five sets. The Spaniard is tireless in defence and could frustrate Paul. They have both already played one five set tournament in the match so far, with Bautista Agut overcoming Brandon Holt in round two from two sets down and Tommy Paul going the distance with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. It wouldn’t surprise anyone to see this match go all the way to five sets.
Roberto Bautista Agut vs Tommy Paul Preview
With our predictions locked in, let’s take a closer look at the two individuals.
Roberto Bautista Agut
While Roberto Bautista Agut may no longer be at the same level he was when he reached 9th in the ATP rankings in 2019, he is still a formidable opponent just as Andy Murray found out two days ago. The Spaniard made it to the final of the Adelaide 250 in preparation for the Australian Open and has done well so far. If he beats Paul then he will have made it to the quarter-finals of the competition for the second time in his career.
Tommy Paul
At the age of 25, Tommy Paul should be entering the peak years of his career. Currently ranked 35th in the world, there is a feeling that he is perhaps underperforming a touch and could push the top 20 in the coming years. His preparation for the Australian Open wasn’t ideal, losing in the second round of the Adelaide 250 to Jack Draper. However, that hasn’t stopped him performing well in Melbourne and a win against Bautista Agut would give him the opportunity to play in his first ever grand slam quarter final.
Roberto Bautista Agut vs Tommy Paul Head to Head
The pair have played each other on four previous occasions. Although Bautista Agut has won three out of those four matches, Tommy Paul won the most recent one.
