Bautista Agut Australian Open 2023: Odds, Next Match and Predictions

Read this Roberto Bautista Agut Australian Open 2023 preview before betting on his next match in the Round of 16.

Roberto Bautista Agut Australian Open 2023 Odds

Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut has been playing professional tennis for the better part of two decades. And yet, at the age of 34, he’s playing some of his best tennis here at the Australian Open 2023.

Heading into the Australian Open 2023 as a rank outsider, Bautista Agut has significantly improved his odds of winning the tournament now. From odds of 250/1 (251.00) pre-tournament, he now sits at 33/1 (34.00) to win heading into the Round of 16.

Ranked No.25 in the world and playing here as the 24th seed, Bautista Agut has consistently been inside the men’s Top 30 since 2014. However, he’s often been overshadowed by his fellow countrymen—first Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer, and now more recently Carlos Alcaraz. This doesn’t detract from the fact that Bautista Agut is one of the game’s most consistent performers however, and he’s made a Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon and quarterfinal here down under.

Now, with wins over Joao Sousa, Brandon Holt and Andy Murray, Bautista Agut is the last Spaniard standing in the Australian Open draw, and will be licking his lips at a potential semifinal berth yet again in a Grand Slam. Here’s a look at how Roberto Bautista Agut’s latest match unfolded, and what’s next for the Spaniard at the Australian Open.

Roberto Bautista Agut Australian Open 2023 Last Match

It must be tough being Bautista Agut. Not only is he overshadowed by Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz in his own country, but stepping onto the court in the third round at the Australian Open, almost all of the crowd was cheering against him.

That’s because his opponent was the legendary Andy Murray, who had just come off consecutive five set thrillers to send home 13th seed Matteo Berrettini and home favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis. With Murray rekindling form of old, Bautista Agut was an obstacle the crowd wanted removed from this way.

The Spaniard was to be an immovable object however, and proved the end of the road for Murray. Playing with absolute discipline and patience, Bautista Agut went deep with Murray and out-rallied him, despite the crowd being overwhelmingly in support of the Brit.

6-1, 7-6(7), 6-3, 6-4 was the final result, sending Bautista Agut into the Round of 16.

Roberto Bautista Agut Australian Open 2023 Next Match

Next up, Bautista Agut faces in-form American Tommy Paul.

The 25-year-old won a battle of the young American’s last round, defeating Jenson Brooksby in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. Prior to that, Paul has successfully navigated German Jan-Leonard Struff in the first round, and 30th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second.

Paul is ranked No.35 in the world, and made it to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time last year. Bautista Agut holds a 3-1 lead in the pair’s head to head, but dropped the last match against Paul 6-4, 6-4 in the Paris Masters a few months ago.

Roberto Bautista Agut Australian Open 2023 Prediction

Bautista Agut has a fantastic opportunity to make a career-best Grand Slam run here.

The Spaniard is the only seeded player remaining in his quarter of the draw, with three other young American’s as competition. While these players will be no easy beats, Bautista Agut’s experience should enable him to navigate the big matches and set a semifinal berth against Novak Djokovic.

Nole is carrying a leg injury, and could well be vulnerable against someone like Roberto Bautista Agut. A Spanish grinder is the last type of player Djokovic would be looking to meet in a Grand Slam semifinal where he’s restricted in his movement.

We say Bautista Agut is good for a semifinal here, and has a real shot of making the final, depending on how Novak pulls up in his next two matches.
