Tommy Paul Australian Open 2023 Odds
Tommy Paul is a daring American player that has shown skill and speed in the past. In 2022 he had the best year of his young career when entering the world top 30 for the first time. Paul seems to elevate his game when the big tournaments come too. That said he’s yet to make it past round 4 in a Grand Slam so this explains his outright market odds. Here are the current outright odds:
Since Paul doesn’t have any experience deep in Grand Slams it can be understood why his odds for the title are so low. Also he is facing Djokovic in the semifinal.
Upcoming match vs Djokovic – Paul Australian Open 2023
Paulhas grabbed his chance to become the first American since Andy Roddick in 2009 to reach the Australian Open semifinals. He has been playing some great tennis in Melbourne in recent days and with a bit of luck regarding some easy opponents he was solid enough to reach that far.
Now Paul faces a completely different challenge though and against the ‘King of Melbourne’ and red-hot favourite Djokovic the American will need something extraordinary if he is to win. Paul has the returns to trouble Djokovic’s serve, but he lacks the experience of the Serbian. We believe Paul will put up a decent fight but still lose, probably in straight sets.
All that said we must stress that Paul has won 4 of his last 6 matches against top 5 players. Including impressive wins over Rafa Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz in 2022. This clearly shows that he knows how to trouble the best in the business.
This is set to be the first ever meeting between the two.
Paul 2023 Australian Open Results
- Paul vs Struff – Won – 6-1, 7-6 (6), 6-2 (2023 Australia Open 1st Round)
- Paul vs Davidovich Fokina – Won – 6-2, 2-6, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4 (2023 Australian Open 2nd Round)
- Paul vs Brooksby – Won – 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 (2023 Australian Open 3rd Round)
- Paul vs Bautista Agut – Won – 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 (2023 Australian Open 4th Round)
- Paul vs Shelton – Won – 7-6 (6), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 (2023 Australian Open quarterfinals)
Paul was dominant in round 1 against the qualifier Struff. Then he had to come back from 1:2 down against the 30th seed Davidovich Fokina before eventually winning in 5 sets. He needed 4 hours to do so.
Paul’s appetite seems to have grown since that win though and in round 3 he produced his best tennis so far when blasting off the court fellow American Brooksby in 3 quick sets. Paul hit 7 aces to only 2 double faults in this match. He never got his serve broken. At the same time his returns were powerful and precise, which brought his 14 breakpoints in the 3 sets, leaving no chance to his opponent.
Paul’s growth continued in round 4 against the 24th seed Bautista Agut. Despite dropping the second set Paul played some excellent tennis and won 3:1 deservedly. His own serve once again worked very well – 11 aces to just 1 double fault. He also won 71% of all points on his first serve.
Full of confidence Paul then grabbed his chance in the quarterfinals against the lower ranked fellow American Shelton and deservedly won 3:1. Edging a tight set 1 tiebreak proved crucial on way to the victory. Paul once again was returning serves very well in this match and he accumulated 15 break points against the big-serving Shelton. Paul also continued to be very effective on his own serve – won 86% of his points on 1st serve and 68% on 2nd serve. He had a dip in form in set 3 though, committing 11 unforced errors in just 4 games. Such thing would likely be devastating against a better opponent.
Paul Injury update: All fine in this department
Paul has shown great fitness and endurance in the first 3 rounds and it seems he is in top shape right now. With 2 of his 3 wins so far in straight sets he should have plenty of energy left in the tank too, if he needs to go the distance from now on.
Paul Past Australian Open Results
Paul made it past the opening round in all of the last 3 Australian Opens, those his only appearances in the main draw Down Under. He went past round 2 only on his debut in 2020 though and is yet to go deeper than round 3.
His most famous win so far in Melbourne was back in 2020 when in round 2 thriller he edged the 20th seed Grigor Dimitrov in 5 sets.
Paul Australian Open 2023 Prediction – semifinal
We believe that Paul can achieve his best ever Australian Open result by reaching Round 4. This will also match his best ever achievement regarding Grand Slams. Paul has been a start on the rise in 2022 and even against the ever-dangerous Bautista Agut he was able to dominate and win in 4 sets.
Paul already achieved his best ever Australian Open run by making it to round 4. Inspired by that he might have one more surprise up his sleeve. Somehow Paul enters his first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal as the favourite against the young Shelton. Now it is up to Paul to make the most of that opportunity. However, even if he wins next for him is waiting Djokovic and this is probably a challenge too hard even for the inspiring Paul. His journey is likely to end there though. Still no matter what happens from now on Paul will record his best ever run in Melbourne, so he has no pressure on his shoulders.
