World no. 20 Dona Vekic takes on the challenge of the world number 86 American Madison Brengle in her Miami Open opening match. The 86-ranked Brengle progressed in round 1 after her opponent Anismiova retired midway through the second set.

Madison Brengle vs Dona Vekic – Match Predictions
Contents
Set 1 Over 8.5 Games
We certainly believe that Vekic will dominate from the baseline in this match. Still, we think that the American Brengle will try and put up a decent fight at least early on as she is on home soil. That’s why we predict that the first set will have at least 9 games, which means both players to win at least 3 games.
Our prediction is also backed by the fact that in both previous H2H clashes between the 2 the first sets went over 8.5 games.
Vekic to Win 2-0
We fancy Vekic to win easily, just as she did against Brengle 5 weeks ago in Linz. Vekic likes hard courts, Brengle is at the end of her career at age 32 and the American hasn’t been able to seriously trouble the top 30 players for some time. Due to all this, we think Vekic won’t have issues and progress without dropping a set.
Madison Brengle vs Dona Vekic Preview
Our predictions for this match have now been established, let’s see how these players have fared so far in the 2023 campaign.
Madison Brengle
Madison Brengle is struggling so far in 2023. She lost in round 1 in her first 4 tournaments of the year, including the Australian Open. She then failed to even make it to the main draws in Qatar and Dubai after defeats in the qualifiers against players ranked outside the world’s top 100.
Brengle reached round 2 at Indian Wells but the last time she managed to win a match against a top 40 player was last August in a WTA250 Cleveland event. Brengle went past round 1 in Miami after a lucky tiebreak win in set 1 against her American compatriot Anisimova, who got injured soon after that and had to retire in set 2.
Dona Vekic
Dona Vekic is back in the world’s top 20 after winning the title on the hard courts of Monterrey in early March. There she beat in the final the world number 5 Garcia. Vekic has 3 other quarterfinal appearances this year, all on hard surfaces, and she’s clearly back among the elite after recovering successfully from her hamstring injury.
Probably still slightly tired from her title run in Mexico Vekic suffered an unexpected early exit in Indian Wells. She had plenty of time to rest since though and we expect her to be much fresher now. Being a seeded player she received a Bye in round 1, so she enters this contest well-rested.
Madison Brengle vs Dona Vekic Head to Head
This will be the third match between the two with them sharing a quick 2-0 win each. Brengle won easily way back in 2015 when Vekic was still only 18-year-old. However, just over a month ago when they met for the second time in Linz Vekic cruised to an easy 6-3, 6-1 victory.
