For me, the Australian Open doubles events always seem to host some of the most exciting matches in Melbourne. Compared with singles matches, the doubles games are quicker and more unpredictable, and they are very different in terms of tactics and key skills. Because of that, I believe it’s well worth tuning in to watch some of the doubles action if you can!

As for the scheduled doubles events for the 2024 Australian Open, these consist of the men’s and women’s doubles events, as well as the mixed doubles, mainly. However, there are also events for the wheelchair doubles and junior doubles.

So as you can see – plenty of doubles matches will be coming up in Melbourne this year. And for those who are interested, you can track the entire Australian Open schedule right now before everything kicks off. This is a great way to keep your finger on the pulse and give you a taste of what’s to come, yet the doubles-specific schedule will be covered here too.

Additionally, today you will discover key details relating to the draw, top seeds, defending champions, and more. So, ready to dive in?

Let’s now take a much closer look at the 2024 Australian Open doubles competitions.

A quick guide to the Australian Open doubles events for 2024

At the time of writing, the Australian Open qualifying matches are well underway. However, since there is no qualifying for the doubles events – you’ve not missed a single stroke at Melbourne Park as things stand. See, you’re already off to a flyer for the 2024 doubles events!

This also puts us in a prime position to cover the event overview before the action begins on Sunday, January 14th. So, what is there to know about the Australian Open doubles competitions for 2024?

First and foremost, you should know that just like the singles competitions, the doubles competitions will follow a progressive knock-out format. At the start of the tournament, 64 pairs will start their campaigns in the men’s and women’s doubles events. This number is reduced to 32 pairs for the mixed doubles.

As a result of this, participants in the men’s and women’s doubles events must win six matches in a row to win the 2024 Australian Open. Yet for the mixed doubles, the requirement is five straight match wins for the title.

Of course, there is considerable Australian Open prize money available for these competitions too, which you can read all about through our respective page.

I am very excited to watch the men’s doubles event in 2024, which can be done through several Australian Open live streaming options. This year promises to be quite a spectacle given the fresh pairings and major talents who are set to compete. And through the sections that I’ve listed below, you will discover all of the important details concerning the men’s tournament.

Defending champions

The 2023 men’s doubles event was pretty awesome from an Aussie perspective. Amazingly, the wildcards, Jason Kubler and Rinky Hijikata managed to overcome multiple seeds to capture the title. Best of all – they are back for another bite of the cherry in 2024.

Top seeds

For the men’s doubles event in 2024, there will be a total of 16 seeds. Believe it or not, there are 11 previous champions entered in the main draw this year too, so the competition is fierce. As for the main seeds, let me share the top five pairs now:

  • Dodig/Krajicek – Seed 1
  • Bopanna/Ebden – Seed 2
  • Ram/Salisbury – Seed 3
  • Granollers/Zeballos – Seed 4
  • Gonzalez/Skupski – Seed 5

Finals date

If you’re hoping to catch the men’s doubles final this year, you’d better keep Saturday, January 27th free. This game will feature in the evening on Rod Laver Arena.

Women’s Australian Open doubles event – a full run-through

Just as I’ve done for the men’s doubles event above, I’d like to cover the same, key information for the women’s doubles event at the 2024 Australian Open now.

Defending champions

Although things don’t always pan out this way, it was the number one seeds, Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova, who won the 2023 title. However, these two have split for the 2024 Australian Open doubles event, which could be a relief for the other competitors.

Top seeds

The top seeds in the women’s event are extremely strong indeed for 2024. In fact, the combined ranking for the top five seeds are all lower than 20. As for who is leading the way as the top seeds in 2024, here they are:

  • Gauff/Pegula – Seed 1
  • Su-wei/Mertens – Seed 2
  • Hunter/Siniakova – Seed 3
  • Krejcikova/Siegemund – Seed 4
  • Haddad Maia/Townsend – Seed 5

Finals date

The finals date for the women’s doubles event at the 2024 Australian Open is Sunday, January 28th, which is the very last day of the tournament.

Australian Open Mixed doubles tournament – key details

Last but not least, let me conclude this breakdown of the three main Australian Open doubles events by sharing the key information for the mixed competition.

Defending champions

In 2023, the mixed doubles event belonged to the Brazilian duo of Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos. They stormed their way to the title despite being unseeded, which is quite an epic achievement.

Top seeds

At the time of publication, we are still awaiting the release of the full draw for the mixed doubles. Therefore, the top seeds are not yet known.

Finals date

Unless there are delays or other major adjustments to the provision schedule, the mixed doubles final will be played on Friday, January 26th.

2024 Australian Open doubles predictions

For those who are interested, I’ve shared a range of Australian Open predictions for the singles events in 2024 already. These will complement the following doubles predictions nicely if you are planning on placing a wager or two.

As for what my predictions are for the three major events, let me give a quick overview:

  • Men’s doubles – Max Purcell/Jordan Thompson

I am going for an Australian pair to win the men’s doubles, and this pair is Purcell/Thompson. Max Purcell is a Wimbledon men’s doubles champion, and he made the finals here in 2022. Additionally, Jordan Thompson just took out Rafael Nadal, so his confidence will be sky-high.

  • Women’s doubles – Storm Hunter/Katerina Siniakova

Here we have a dream duo, in my opinion. Siniakova won the event in 2023, and Storm Hunter is currently the world number one. So I can see them going all the way in 2024.

  • Mixed doubles

Until the draw has been confirmed, no predictions can be given for the mixed doubles, as of yet.
