Cam Whitmore NBA Draft Profile – The Small Forward That Has It All

The 2023 NBA Draft will see some exciting new blood enter the league. However, one thing the 2023 Draft Class is short of is quality wings. This being probably the more sought-after position from pretty much all NBA teams right now explains why Cam Whitmore’s stocks keep on rising the closer we get to draft night. Below, we give you a detailed profile preview of the projected top 10 pick Cam Whitmore from Villanova.

Cam Whitmore’s Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

Cam Whitmore is seen as a true small forward, who attacks the rim without any fear and is not afraid to get psychical both on the offensive and on the defensive end. Whitmore is a good rebounder and at 232 pounds weight (105 kg) he already has the body mass that should give him an advantage on the glass against even bigger opponents.

He showed very good ability at finishing in traffic and his explosiveness during the NBA Combine reminded many of the scouts of Zion Williamson. The Ringer’s scouting report on Whitmore shows perfectly what his NBA appeal and upside are: “He explodes off the dribble like a semi-truck with a Ferrari’s accelerator.”

Whitmore proved to be a proper modern wing too as he shot 34.3% from beyond the arc on 4.2 3-PT shot attempts in his Freshman year at Villanova. He also showed very good defensive skills and led his team with 1.4 steals per game. This earned him the Big East Freshman of the Year award. Whitmore also represented Team USA at the FIBA Under-18 American Championship in 2022 and he was named the MVP of the tournament.

Weaknesses

Cam Whitmore’s main weakness seems to be his free-throw shooting. He averaged only 70.3% from the line in his freshman year. The other issue that might concern some teams is his patchy passing skills. Whitmore accumulated just 19 assists in 26 games for Villanova.

Whitmore also had a thumb injury during this season and he missed 7 games as a result. He also had a few patchy periods during the campaign where he kept disappearing for long stretches of the matches and was hardly helpful at the attacking end.

NBA Player Comparison

Cam Whitmore probably can be compared closest to the likes of Miles Bridges, Keldon Johnson and Jae Crowder from the current NBA players. Solid defensively and on the glass, but not always very active on the attacking end is the best Cam can be described at this stage of his development.

NBA Draft Projection

We believe that Cam Whitmore will be selected somewhere between the 5th and 10th. It is probably more realistic for him to be the 7th pick or higher, but many see Whitmore as a great fit for the young Detroit Pistons team and as they have the 5th pick this might see Cam being selected slightly earlier than most of his projections show.
