Trainer Lucinda Russell won the Grand National for a second time last weekend, as her Corach Rambler romped home under a fine ride from Derek Fox. 5lb claiming jockey Patrick Wadge will be hoping to follow in Fox’s footsteps as he rides Mighty Thunder for the same trainer in Saturday’s Scottish Grand National.
Are punters following the trainer?
Last weekend, Corach Rambler was hugely fancied and punters weren’t shy in coming forward to back the eventual Grand National winner. It’s not quite the same with Lucinda Russell’s runner here, though.
Mighty Thunder is far from a huge outsider, but in the early betting, plenty of others seem to be preferred, including the trainer’s other runner Your Own Story, who currently trades at 7/1.
As for Mighty Thunder, some layers are scared to offer anything substantial. fearing the wily trainer by offering no more than 14/1. Such firms include Betfred and Unibet. Elsewhere, Coral have gone 20/1, while PaddyPower and William Hill rate the ten-year-old as an 18/1. bet365 currently offer the best price at 22/1, so that’s the place to go if you think the shrewd handler can land a Grand National double with this one.
Can Mighty Thunder do it?
Corach Rambler’s claims were as clear as day, so the question is can Mighty Thunder do it? On recent form, the answer would have to be no.
That said, the ten-year-old has won this race before. The trouble is his efforts this season have been far from overly encouraging. He was tailed off at Musselburgh in February, while although he ran with credit, he found the extended four miles a bit too testing when finishing sixth at Newcastle next time out. He did keep on well over shorter at Kelso last time out, though, while he has dropped to a nice mark, so much so that he’s now 19lbs lower in the weights than when scoring in this race back in 2021.
On the basis that he has won this race before, from higher in the weights, Mighty Thunder cannot be discounted, especially with him getting weight from most of the field.
