It’s only within the last 24-48 hours that we have learned of the final list of Melbourne Cup runners. Like all major races, there were far more entrants than the final Melbourne Cup field allowed. Therefore, we went through the standard process of elimination to determine who the final runners would be. Of course, once we had that list of final runners, there was the subsequent draw to see where each horse would be placed.
With that said, both of these important steps have now been completed ahead of the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday. So we can now produce information that is 100% accurate regarding who the participants will be, where they are placed, who the favourites are relating to the odds and more. In order to give you the most comprehensive breakdown that we can for the Melbourne Cup runners, we’ve covered each of these key areas below.

A breakdown of main Melbourne Cup runners – top 10 favourites
In case you didn’t already know, a total of 24 horses will be participating in the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday. Clearly, that’s a pretty sizable field. So rather than giving information on each of the 24 horses, which you would no doubt get bored of, we’ve chosen to focus on the top 10 favourites. We are doing this in order to give you the most important information regarding the possible winners. And at the same time, you can use this information to place some wagers on the race, if you like.
With that cleared up and without further ado, let’s cover the top ten contenders for the Melbourne Cup right now.
Deauville Legend – 3.60
Deauville Legend is the horse that has everyone talking ahead of the Melbourne Cup. This horse is the favourite by quite a margin, with odds of 3.50 compared with the 8.50 of his nearest rival – Without a Fight. He has two long-distance wins under his belt in 2022 alone, winning both York and Newmarket. These were around 2,400m and 2,600m, respectively, which are much shorter than the Melbourne Cup. But then again, how can you argue with those results?
Place the bet at bet365Without a Fight – 11.00
Following closely from Deauville Legend in the odds rankings we have Without a Fight. This horse also has a couple of long-distance wins for the 2022 season, much like the favourite mentioned above. But both of these wins were in York, and he took home the 1st place trophy in these races back in June and July. Without a Fight has shed a bit of weight since these wins, mainly because the Melbourne Cup is more physically demanding at 3,200m in distance. Then again, he is clearly showing great form this year, hence the 8.50 odds seen at major betting sites.
Place the bet at bet365Gold Trip – 12.00
Currently, it’s Gold Trip that is taking third place in the Melbourne Cup field in terms of odds. Gold Trip doesn’t quite have the coveted wins that our first two horses do, yet this isn’t a major red flag – not by any means. This horse has run close to victory at long distances, most recently in the Caulfield Cup, and this is an impressive result considering that this was a field of 18 horses. And with odds of 10.00 right now, this is actually a tempting bet to go for.
Place the bet at bet365Montefilia – 12.00
Montefilia steps in as one of the few mares participating in the Melbourne Cup this year. And she enters the competition as 4th in the odds list for one specific reason. She experienced long-distance success at Randwick around 12 months ago, winning a G1 event that was 2,400m in length. Backing this up, Montefilia had a great run in the Caulfield Cup, finishing in 4th behind the ultimate G1 race winner, Durston. She has odds of 11.00 going into the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday.
Place the bet at bet365Realm of Flowers – 12.00
Realm of Flowers poses an interesting horse to possibly back at the Melbourne Cup. We say this because this horse has actually posted a win at Flemington already in recent times. This occurred in May 2021, when the horse took 1st place in a long-distance event, showing that she has the stamina to last out there in the bigger races. And she has odds of 10.00 at the moment, which is actually a lower price than we’ve seen just a few days ago.
Place the bet at bet365Hoo Ya Mal – 16.00
The form of Hoo Ya Mal has been a little less consistent than the four horses mentioned previously. However, this horse has been formidable in long-distance races in the past. He came 2nd at the G1 event in Epsom back in June 2022, and he won the G3 event at Goodwood in August 2022. So he does have the ability to put in big performances over long distances, he just doesn’t do it every time. This is why the odds for Hoo Ya Mal are down at 13.00.
Place the bet at bet365Smokin’ Romans – 19.00
It’s pretty to ignore a horse that produced a G1 win on this very track less than a month ago. Therefore, Smokin’ Romans is a horse that deserves its place in the top 10. Sure, that race wasn’t quite as long as the Melbourne Cup will be, which is why there are a few doubters out there. Yet this horse could well pull through, and the odds are also 17.00.
Place the bet at bet365Lunar Flare – 23.00
Next up we have Lunar Flare, and she has also tasted success on the track at Flemington. In fact, her success was more recent than Realm of Flowers mentioned above. She took the win at a G3 event on this track at the start of October, so she is familiar with the course and she definitely has the firepower to win the longer events. At the time of writing, she has odds of 15.00, but she would well be a dark horse for this one.
Place the bet at bet365Duais – 23.00
The 10th and final horse in our breakdown of the main Melbourne Cup runners is Duais. She won a long-distance G1 in Newcastle back in March 2022, and she certainly has what it takes to perform well in the Melbourne Cup. This was actually the second G1 race win that she produced back-to-back since she also won the Australia Cup. However, the form since then has been somewhat ropey, hence the lower odds of 21.00.
Place the bet at bet365Vow and Declare – 26.00
Of all the horses that are racing in the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, you wouldn’t expect to see a previous winner in the line up. But that’s exactly what we have with Vow and Declare – a horse that won the event in 2019. Of course, that’s three years ago now, so the horse is somewhat more ‘seasoned’ compared with the 2019 run. However, you can just never count out a horse that has won an event in the past, hence the odds of 17.00 here.
Place the bet at bet365Changes to the Melbourne Cup runners over the last few days
As is fairly common in these major events, the list of entrants can chop and change constantly. We’ve seen all kinds of changes over the last few days alone, which is why we wanted to make you aware of them right now:
Melbourne Cup scratchings
The first thing we’d like to quickly run through is the list of scratchings for the Melbourne Cup this year. And of the many scratchings that we’ve witnessed, the top two remain Durston and Loft. Of course, Durston was the Caulfield Cup champion, and Loft was the second-favourite in the ante-post markets. But sadly, both have fallen victim to Melbourne Cup scratchings in the last few days.
Melbourne Cup field – barrier list for favourites
The ‘barriers’ were announced just yesterday for the Melbourne Cup field. And of the top three favourites, it’s fair to say that Deauville Legend was given a boost with the 9th barrier confirmation. As for Without a Fight and Gold Trip, they’ve been given barriers 18 and 14, respectively. This is by no means as great as barrier 9 given to the current race favourite.
