The third race on Newbury’s excellent Saturday card will be the Watership Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham Stakes. This is a Group 3 contest run over a straight seven furlongs. It is contested exclusively by three-year-old’s and has often acted as the race that propels future stars into the limelight.
A race that lacks depth
In truth, this doesn’t appear to be a vintage renewal of this race. Knight has done everything asked of him so far and looked a decent sort when winning a Group 3 over course and distance when last seen in October. That form makes him one of the likelier types.
Charyn lost nothing in defeat when finishing third in the Mill Reef Stakes over six furlongs at Newbury towards the end of last season, while he took a step in the right direction to win at Chantilly in France less than a month later, shaping on both occasions that this extra furlong would suit. He’s another who could get involved, as Theoryofeverything for the powerful John Gosden stable. He’s only had the one run, but he could hardly have done it better over this trip at Doncaster, taking to the soft ground like a duck to water. He could be very good in time.
Favourite hard to oppose
However, for all there are some nice looking types in here, nothing boast the form of Andrew Balding’s Chaldean, who very much looked like a horse going places last season, much like his sire, who is none other than the mighty Frankel.
After winning over course and distance in July, the colt stepped forward to impress at York, before making light work of claiming a Group 2 success at Doncaster. He signed off for the season by winning the prestigious Dewhurst (Group 1) at Newmarket. Frankly, on that form, he ought to win this on reappearance, and don’t be surprised if he does it well in the hands of Frankie Dettori.
Best Bet: Chaldean to Win @ 4/5
