Friday’s round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club saw last year’s runner-up, Taylor Pendrith, jump into a tie for first with day one leader Taylor Moore at 13-under par after posting an 8-under par 64.

Five-time PGA Tour winner Rickie Fowler and newcomer Ludvig Aberg are a shot behind at 12-under, followed by four players at 11-under, including superstar Collin Morikawa, who is looking for his first win since 2021.

There were definitely surprising players who failed to make the cut, including two-time major winner Justin Thomas and title holder Tony Finau.

What was the cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic?

The cut line was set at 4-under par.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Cut Rule

The Rocket Mortgage Classic cut rule is as follows: After the second round (36 holes), a single cut is made. The top 65 golfers in the standings, as well as any players tied for 65th place, will qualify for the weekend. Anyone ranking 66th or below will fail to make the cut and be eliminated from the competition.

Who missed the cut?

Top-ranked players who missed the cut include Justin Thomas (+1), Tony Finau (-1), Hideki Matsuyama (-1) and Tom Kim (-2).

Other notables who were expected to play better but failed to qualify for the weekend were Austin Eckroat, Tom Hoge, Joel Dahmen, Harry Hall, Joseph Bramlett, Brandon Wu, Webb Simpson, Ben An and Mark Hubbard.

Justin Thomas

The 30-year-old has now missed three cuts in his past four events. It appeared he’d gotten back on track after earning a top-10 finish at last week’s Travelers Championship, but an opening round of 76 (4-over) doomed his chances. He battled back with a 3-under 69 on Friday but still fell five strokes short of the cut line.

Tony Finau

After a convincing victory in last year’s event by five strokes and finishing at 26-under par, Finau put together a performance mirroring the complete opposite this time around. The Salt Lake City, Utah native recorded an even-par 72 on day one, followed by a 1-under 71 on Friday to miss the cut by three shots.

The 33-year-old has missed two of his last four cuts and hasn’t finished inside the top 20 since winning the Mexico Open in April.

Hideki Matsuyama

The Japanese golfer had made eight-straight cuts and earned five top-20 finishes leading up to the event. An opening round of 75 hurt his chances, and despite bouncing back with a four-under 68 on Friday, the 2020 Masters winner came up three strokes short of the weekend.

Who made the cut?

A total of 84 players made the cut out of the starting field of 156.
