Round two of the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club featured last year’s second-place finisher, Taylor Pendrith, shoot up the leaderboard in a tie for first with day one leader Taylor Moore at 13-under par.

PGA Tour star Rickie Fowler and rookie Ludvig Aberg remain a stroke behind at 12-under, followed by four players at 11-under, including two-time major winner Collin Morikawa who is searching for his first win in nearly two years.

A number of household names, including defending champion Tony Finau missed the cut, which we’ll dive into later in this article.

Key Moments of the Day

The following section will showcase the highlights and memorable moments of round one.

Two Taylors targeting the title

Taylor Moore and Taylor Pendrith took two different trails to share Friday’s lead. Moore followed up his opening round 64 with a 5-under 67 on Friday, which included closing with back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18.

Pendrith fired home the second-lowest round of the day, a bogey-free 8-under 64 that featured eight birdies. The Canadian is trying to obtain his first PGA Tour win. The last time the 32-year-old hoisted a trophy was in 2019 on the Canadian Tour.

Fowler and Aberg sit a stroke behind

Another player looking for his first triumph since 2019 (Waste Management Phoenix Open) is Fowler. The Oklahoma State product was a joint favorite entering the tournament at 14/1.

He shot a seven-under 65 (tied for the third-best round) to move to 12-under. The 34-year-old recorded six birdies, an eagle and a bogey. After bogeying the 16th, Fowler bounced back with a chip-in eagle from just off the green on the par five 17th.

Aberg found success for a second consecutive day (5-under 67) after his first round of 65. The Swede was the No. 1 ranked amateur a few months ago before turning professional.

Andrew Landry catches fire

The Port Neches, Texas native has had a difficult year with a ton of missed cuts and hasn’t finished higher than 40th. He found a rhythm on Friday with the lowest round of the day (9-under 63). Landry poured in nine birdies with a 31 on the front nine and 32 on the back to climb into contention at 10-under in a tie for ninth.

Finau, Thomas and Matsuyama come up short

The three distinguished veterans all missed the cut despite being favorites to win the event. Thomas and Finau have been struggling to put consistent results together. Matsuyama has strung together solid finishes but endured a bad week.

Tom Kim, who was 20-1 and highly touted entering this week, also failed to qualify for the weekend.
