Renegades vs Brisbane Heat – Previews and Betting Tips
Contents
The home side’s greatest strength in their opening two games of this season’s competition has been their batting. Nic Maddinson top scored with 87 runs from 49 balls in the reverse fixture against Brisbane Heat in Cairns in Match 3 of the tournament.
Alongside Maddinson, the Renegades have Australia’s T20 Captain, Aaron Finch, who hit 70 not out from 43 balls on Sunday to take the Player of the Match Award. Finch is the second highest run scorer in BBL history, with 2891 runs and 25 scores of 50+. We recommend backing him to score over 21.5 runs at the GMBHA Stadium.
For Brisbane Heat, they have a strong batting core of Colin Munro, Sam Billings and captain Jimmy Peirson. New Zealander Munro joined Heat ahead of this season after representing the 2021-22 Champions Perth Scorchers in the last two BBL campaigns. He averaged 43.33 from 13 innings last season and struck 443 runs in total the previous year.
We see Munro as the key batter in the Heat line-up and he is a strong choice to be their highest run scorer in this game. Spinner Matthew Kuhnemann dismissed three of Melbourne Renegades’ batters in Match 3 and he should have success on this pitch which historically has yielded more wickets for slow bowlers.
Melbourne Renegades – Preview
It has been an excellent start to the season for Melbourne Renegades who are unrecognisable from the team who finished bottom of the tournament in the last three BBLs. So far they have beaten Brisbane Heat by 22 runs and Sydney Thunder by four wickets.
After beating Brisbane Heat only six days before this clash, the Renegades will be full of confidence ahead of this re-match. Spinner Akeal Hosein took 3-15 in the first game and he is likely to get plenty of assistance from the pitch in this match. The team management will be looking for multiple players to step up with the bat and ball as the two victories have been over-reliant on one batter, Maddinson in the first game and Finch in the second, producing a big score.
Playing XI: Sam Harper (wk), Nic Maddinson (c), Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Finch, Jonathan Wells, Andre Russell, Akeal Hosein, Will Sutherland, Tom Rogers, Kane Richardson, Mujeeb Ur Rahman
Additional Squad Players: Mackenzie Harvey, David Moody, Corey Rocchiccioli, Jon Wells
Brisbane Heat – Preview
This is Brisbane Heat’s second game of the season and they are looking to end a miserable run of form in the BBL which has seen them lose seven consecutive games (including the end of last year). However, the Renegades were one of only three teams who they defeated during the 2021-22 season and many of the same players are on show.
Sam Billings is a new signing in the Brisbane Heat squad but joined them with a strong BBL record. The Englishman’s form during last season, which saw him hit two half-centuries and average 40.57 from nine innings, earned him a call-up to England’s Test team for their final Ashes game. However, pace bowler Xavier Bartlett will need to put in a much stronger performance in this match after conceding 51 runs, including 22 from one over, from his three overs in Match 3.
Playing XI: Josh Brown, Max Bryant, Colin Munro, Sam Billings, Jimmy Peirson (c) (wk), Ross Whiteley, James Bazley, Xavier Bartlett, Mark Steketee, Matthew Kuhnemann, Mitchell Swepson
Additional squad players: Nathan McSweeney, Spencer Johnson
Pitch and Weather Conditions
Batters enjoy playing at this venue with the pitch usually providing good bounce and pace. No team has ever been dismissed for under 100 and there have been 62 sixes from six matches in BBL games here. Combining the scores of both teams, the average total of runs is just under
300.
It will be a warm evening in Geelong with the daytime high of 25 degrees giving way to a more pleasant range of 19 – 21 degrees across the match. It will get progressively more humid as the game develops but although there will be plenty of cloud cover, the forecast is for a dry evening of BBL action.
